Hello, most of the time we all try to give advice or to look for a way to pick the best name. Sometimes you just have to avoid crap and you'll be good.

Can I ask the veterans in the industry for advices on how NOT to pick names?

Thanks

I'm definitely not a veteran but I can tell you what I've learned in the short time I've been in the industry:

definitely NOT buy a domain unless you have a very clear reason why you should make the purchase.
'Making Money' for example is not good enough reason. You should have solid data that the name is wanted by someone OR you have data that you can somehow monetise the name via ads, affiliates, etc.

Do not buy a name just because you *think* it will bring money unless you have sold enough domains to be experienced in that sort of thing

just my opinion

Short version: use common sense :xf.smile:

It's like buying, say, a pair of jeans. You don't just buy the pair that appeals to you because of it color. You perform your due diligence, checking the label for size, at the very least, or even trying them on for size, making sure it's a good fit. Same thing with a domain. No matter how much the name appeals to you, check if it's a good fit, namely whether you are, or soon will be, in a position to monetize it, profit from it in a specific way?? And in what time frame?? When in any doubt, don't buy it! Forget it! Just move on to the next great name on your list, performing the same check again. And again. And again!

a few of the top of my head:

don't pick names that have an "s" where it shouldn't, even if it's available to register or even if it shows high search volume.

don't pick names based on bot appraisals

don't pick names at the end of a trend or a bandwagon

don't pick down the tld ladder for chips, cuz they don't exist that far down

imo...

And what do you, guys, think it's better. To register your own domain and sell it or buy one that is already registered and resell it?

In your case - assuming you're a newbie - it's probably best to buy from auctions/aftermarket. It's simply impossible for a beginner to hand reg stuff that has value IMO.

Don't register a domain name without checking it's background to see if it's been registered before.

(if it's been registered before and you can see on archive.org that it had a for sale page on it for a zillion years, chances are it's not going to sell itself)

The hardest part is trying to find names for a project. Almost all of the names I've dumped have been as a result of registering in frustration due to lack of availability. I find it better to hunt through lists, and if I see one that I like, then I add it to the stockroom. Then if I have a new project, I can hunt through the stockroom for a suitable name.

I feel that in some cases one should not pick a name just because it has many endusers

I have so often seen that a domain has many many endusers but they never really purchase the domain I may have.
The thing i learnt is that one should try and understand the approximate price a user may go to to purchase a domain
