Having had a look at bb there are some great brands on there for very little money considering the deep pockets some businesses have

We often hear of domain investors with large domain portfolios etc but I reckon that it won't be long before domain investors have their own very large portfolio of brands effectively their own bb eg a website full of brands that they are not bothered if the brands sell or not but as the years go by the prices go up etc

But many brands for sale at £2-5k represent extremely good value to businesses that know how to take a brand from nothing more than a 4 or 5 letter
.com and make it a very very successful very valuable brand

Any good brand stories?

Did you hand reg a brandable. Com domain that sold on a website like bb etc that went on to become a very successful brand for its new owner etc?

One of my regrets is that I let a lot of my hand regs drop some years ago. names like 2shy.com and ohup.com were some of the minor ones. I also experimented with some phrases such as flymeto.com.

Sure, some of my sold names have become nice project brands, e.g. Wealthica, Employera, LaunchGrove.

Any decent business can buy a name on the market (does not matter where) 'on a average' for ~$2K and turn it into a success story. If you look at the most common brands today, assuming you did not hear from them before, they would not sell for more than $2K. So the power of the brand is 'what you make out of it'. A good or rather 'decent' name is a 'good start' and nothing more than that. As the domain owner, you have to believe in the name and run with it. Where you take it to, it is all up to your efforts. We are not comparing such names to one worders - businesses pay hundreds of $$$ for them. They are already established businesses and would not mind shelving good chunk of money on rebranding. We are talking about brands for a start up. A decent, pronounceable, short, representable name and top it with lot of trust, hard work and good bit of luck - and you can be a success story.

Exactly most successful brands are made successful by sheer hard work by the owner of the brand and so h owners know that their hard work and determination can make a success out of any business but know that a good brand name is essential

This is kind of saying the opposite of the point of your post. Like you said here...anyone can make any brand a success if they know what they are doing and have the money to do it. While there are some nice names on BB, there is no reason to even spend thousands to buy those...anyone can make up a half-way decent name that is available to hand register for $10...then after putting in work and money, it can become successful.

No, the fact that hand-regged brandables sell and become good brands is not same as the idea that any firm can hand-reg for itself a good brandable to use. Reasons:
1) It takes superb skill and effort to find a good brandable to hand-register, it is a profession like any other. In theory anyone can cook a bit, but realistically people who want extra quality food come to a restaurant or get special training.
2) It takes good timing to hand-register (or dropcatch, or buy on an auction) a decent brandable. Names, including hand-registered, usually are available for a limited time after they drop and can be picked up. Even names that were never registered before are being registered gradually and thus become rare too. So, buying a name hand-registered two years ago is not similar to trying to hand-register today.
3) Brandable marketplaces offer variety. Even if you can find yourself a decent brandable to handreg, it is much better to be able to choose from hundreds of options and pick the very best name.

Incorrect.
1. It doesn't take an 'expert' to find a decent brand name. You don't need special training to recognize something that sounds good, is easy to say and easy to type.
2. Again, if you are hand-registering the domain, it doesn't take any time. While many good names are of course taken, there are billions of possible .com's still available.
3. You are missing the point of putting in money and time to build the brand. It doesn't have to be 100% perfect...because either way, you need to put in time and money to build the brand and get people to recognize it.
If you feel it's worth your money to go and spend thousands of dollars on a new business domain name, go ahead. But in reality, any domain that is easy to say, type and sounds decent can have a brand built on it. And it isn't going to be any easier to buy one at BB than it will be to just hand-register it...because you still need to put in all the time and effort to get the name out there.

Domains have changed eg with all the new golds etc so has search engine rankings etc with the whole right hand side of ads in the main search engine now gone making the price more expensive due to increased competition for ppc ads on the first page of search engine etc and even the best organic seo gets you only as far as the bottom half of page 1 of search engine with ppc getting the top half of page 1 in search results

Which is why a good memorable brandable. Com is becoming extremely desirable but good ones are hard to find and more than worth the few k asking price

A business may keep the brandable. Com as their business name for many many years to come long after the business built on the brandable. Com they buy now has become the success they envisioned it to be originally so the business owner has to get it right first time irrespective of cost

Good points made

Sites like bb allow a person to see what a potential brand would look like and whether a brand stands out or not helped by the addition of a good quality logo etc

And some entrepreneurs know exactly what a brand should convey to their customers and they have the exact logo in their mind and will design it themselves at cost price etc

I think you have it backwards. The business became a success because of the hard work and money the owner put into it, not because of the domain name. Outside of exceptional cases, a brand's success depends on the work and money put into it, not on picking a slightly better domain name. Simply having the perfect domain name does not suddenly give you a successful, thriving business.

Businesses do as you say, if they succeed - they usually come back and rebrand themselves with a new brandable, this time picked by pros :) It takes them a few years to come back and buy a good one.

Incorrect. Very few businesses rebrand themselves. If I had to bet, I would guess less than 1% of all businesses ever rebrand themselves.

Agreed. But a good brandable is a very good "ingredient" to start with. Not to mention, making sure you have the corresponding .COM locked in :xf.smile:

Not necessarily, it really depends on the business and it's model. The family owned pizza shop down the street doesn't really need a brandable name to become a success.

i have sold a lot brandable names, i check up on some of them from time to time. Some are developed into small niche sites, some are still sitting there parked and the odd one's were left to expire (which i gladly picked back up and resold)

You should try the offline sector. I know some guys who they had a big success creating a yogurt brand around a name. When the time has come, they sold it for a lot of money saying that they can replicate the success. With the same team, with double the work and lots of money, they never reached what they achieved before and it was a big fail. There are only a handful of people who can replicate the success again and again, for the rest of us even 1% can make the difference between success and fail.

I don't get your point? Trust me, they still would have failed the second time, even if they had a great domain name. Starting a successful business isn't easy...some people get lucky, some people start at the right time or have the right help...but simply having a cool domain name doesn't make the business.

It's very simple, the same team, with same same amount of time and money invested, the right name can go viral because it's a catchy name and the second time, using a name that doesn't fit the target customer, could be a big loser. A few months ago was an article on entrepreneur.com I think with top 20 unicorn companies that failed because of the name and which, after rebranding they rescued the business. Nobody it's saying that just a name it's enough, but sometimes even that 1% extra could mean the difference between profit and loss. I have lots of real examples in offline, even in my case and some close friends where. Right now I have a cousin who has a business selling a new brand of baby buggies, pushchairs and prams, using a name for the last 2 years. Willing to replicate and win some extra market share, he used the same pushchairs using another name so that he can sale more. Nobody wants the second one, even the product it's exactly the same, just the name it's different.

When I think of brands I think of a certain sportswear tycoon in the uk someone who knows all aspects of brands and owns a lot of brands some bought and some started from scratch etc who also has possibly the perfect domain in the sports sector eg a self explanatory two word. Com

I also bought a perfect self explanatory two word. Com domain about 8 years ago

My domain sits on a small coffee mug as a reminder of my ownership of a good domain where as the sports wear shop owner s domain is a member of multi billion dollar company

A brand is only everything if a person can make something of a brand etc

Some can some can't

The best brandable in the world won't succeed without hard work effort and £

But successful brands and successful businesses usually run a tight we'll organised ship and invest in good friendly competent staff etc that work as a team

These types of businesses will succeed with or without a brand

The brand is the icing on the cake

Not every tasty cake has or needs icing on it to taste good

but even if businesses are the well oiled machines that you say they are, a good brand will never hurt. go for it
