This is just a quick poll. I have so many nGTLDs and I am thinking of developing some into personal sites and blogs. I am just wondering what people think about generic nGTLDs and which would be best suited for web site development. Please vote your favorites that you think in 2017 would be appropriate (and do well) for development.

If "other" nGTLD please add it to a comment reply. Thanks!

Take your pick. Search engines don't care what the extension is as they use other metrics for ranking. Just be careful of user confusion. So my answer would be: any that makes sense for the intended audience. I'm not sure there is a "best" anymore unless you get into the obvious premium domains.

"If you were gonna develop....."....do so when the KEYWORD and the extension works together, in harmony.... Such as .horse may not be considered a good extension on it's own, but when combined with a keyword like "race" it creates a great domain (race.horse)....IMO, with New G's, too much emphasis is on the domain extension and not on the relationship between the keyword and extension. This is a mistake IMO....If New G's are to succeed it is not by one or several extensions being better than others, success will be with all of the extensions creating unique domains as a group. If you want to focus on just the extension and not the relationship with the keyword, best to stick with .COM....

unless you have a very specific niche .net is obviously the best because it is well known.. unlike .xyz etc.. you can't get good results on an extension that people do not know.

Absolutely false.
No dubt about other metrics (backlinks/on page/> 200 google factors) but...
I've delveloped a lot of (>50) projects on domains in nGTLD, in the last 2 years.
And I can 100% assure Google (and the other most important search engines) treat the extension like a keyword.
For this reason it's usefull choose an extension fit perfectly your needs.
Extensions like xyz don't add any value at your domain/business.

PS: does not matter what Google say in their official releases. I can see my project (and a lot of other sies) rank ONLY for the extension/newGTLD.

they rank when they are exact match( including the extension) or just partial match is enough?

Partial match is enough.
To verify what I said, feel free to search on google.com: escorts club.
In second page you'll find a site talk about Dubai (we're working to go in first page ALSO for that keywords, but we need 3/6 months. At the moment project is from 1st to 3rd page in a competitive niche).
Well, as you can see that site don't talk about CLUBS, but google index it by extension (club).
Nowdays is really crazy pay $ XX.XXX and buy escortsclub . com when with $ 1 you can buy a domain in newG and rank in the same way of .com.
Please note, that project, to stay in first pages, there is a super seo work, good backlinks, a fast server, a perfect on page optimization. All the "other factors" tiawood talk in his previous message.
Don't think a .com has a special boost in ranking (because it's only a .com) a .com domain if you don't spend a lot of money in optimization don't rank.
Like all other extensions.
In 2017 domains DON'T rank by their name.
What I want to say is: in my opinion is really crazy spend a lot of money to buy a premium .com, I prefer to spend money (half of .com value) in seo and oprtimization and I'll rank at the same way of a .com.
Time is changing now, a domain name, only the domain name, does not help you to rank better, you've ALWAYS to spend a lot of money if you want to stay in the first pages of google (especially in ultra a competitive niches).
End users know this and they prefer to hand reg a domain and spend the money in optimization (seo/fast server/cdn/on page/and so so on).
They don't want to spend a lot of money for something (premium .com) don't help them to rank better.

I've HUNDREDS one word domains in many extensions (me, co, club, top, pro, xyz, newG).
95 % of my portfolio is one word domains (check my signature, you can find an example).

In 2 years never ever receive a single offer (via sedo/afternic/uniregistry/namepros forum) for them.
Never.

And I'm ready to sell them for an insanely cheap price if I receive an offer, I don't want 4 / 5 figures.
Except .com, 1 word domain does not mean value.
And, for well known extension like co/club/me, is the same.
.wiki?? No value, sorry.
Less than reg fee.

@mpls appraisal and words...

I put some stuff on English.gold but I've rather neglected it.
I registered nolonger.in to comment on Brexit, but I've been a bit distracted by some other issues - Trump and Venezuela for example.

I've got some .xyz names that I was going to use, but I've hit some problems there. I was going to use some to promote a show, but the 90 year old farm owner fractured his hip a couple of weeks ago, so I reckon the show will be cancelled.
