Read this article today. What do you think? Charging for aggregating the NamePros domains for sale?

NameThreads.com Offers New Service That Helps Investors Zero in on Domain Bargains at NamePros

Domain forums have long been popular hunting grounds for investors looking to bag attractive names at bargain prices. However, there are so many domains for sale at the massive NamePros.com forum it can be hard to find the diamonds you are looking for in what seems to be an endless "mine".

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I'd vote for a 'yes, for free' option.

I believe tools based on free services (like a forum) should remain free

isn't this just a data scraper?

I'd use a scraper (one time purchase price for one) and specify searches for anything with "king" lol

Well it's effectively just a better way of searching NamePros sales so I say Yes. Extra exposure for sales means more potential buyers and higher sales prices.

Who would actually be willing to pay for this service is another matter.

I haven't voted. I don't think it's a question of NP allowing this or not, but rather whether the new service finds enough paying members for it to be profitable.

So far 50/50. 3 votes yes, 3 votes no.

My feelings are mixed. A website owner should have some control over others scraping data. Especially when they charge for it. Happens alot in acting/casting. Craigslist finally put a stop to it. They closed off their full rss feed and took other measures to prevent spiders and scrapers.

There are possible benefits for those that sell here. More exposure. So just wanted to get a read on how members feel about this. I mean, if NP is okay with it, heck I could do that too. Anyone could.

True. The site benefits. The buyer benefits. The seller benefits. The only one that doesn't benefit is NP.

Realistically, we don't even know if NP authorized it. Perhaps they did. Just don't know. Let's get Eric's opinion...

@Eric Lyon what say you?

On the fence as well - if NP had put this together, I would pay, so if the 3rd party has an affiliate program and NP could benefit then yes. Or NP does their own in-house version. I don't know who their target customers are other than NP members already, since to benefit from the auctions here you have to set up a NP account anyway.

Hmmm. Undecided for now.

Looking forward to thoughts from @Eric Lyon

The premise of the site is unusual too. I have never found it hard to find domains that are for sale on NP. This new service says it's hard to find the domains. I don't know if I agree with that.

It's hard to find domains that match certain criteria, e.g. CVCV, or filtered by keyword, or price/BIN or other search options they seem to provide.

That being said, I agree that there are certain issues associated with such data mining, from obtaining the listing runner's consent, to how stale the database becomes once domains get sold or removed.

interesting. the community feedback so far is evenly split. I will say this, if NP has not authorized this site or licensed the content, they could have a beef.

I mean, does that mean someone is allowed to scrape the whole forum and sell the data from another site. Where does it end?

However, NP members could get more buyers and NP could get more members. That could be good.

Just wondering how NP views this because I am a techie and something inside me said taking data from NP would not be right without permission.

For, I find more than enough domains. If I find more, I'll buy more. :)

Personally, I couldn't see myself paying for the service. I would just write my own script. :)

If NP allows auctions to be accessed at a public venue that does not require registration/membership/agreement to terms of service then the data is not protected and just about anything can be done with it.

So expect auctions to be a 'members only' part of the forum or the cloud flare settings get throttled down for auctions to prevent scraping... who knows lots of solutions here to a minor problem.

DNbolt likes to scrape... is this the same person launching this site?

No Joe Martin Kellerman is the member here with this new website.

I can't see any problem with him doing that. I also think he's also doing a service to those listing names at auction here by advertising them somewhere else.

Some folks are busy and don't have time to browse the forum for hours, they might pay for this service to get a list of names then come here to buy what they like.

The votes are trending No.

My interest is really to know the position of NP.. Is it okay or is it a problem to take all the offered domains from NP and repackage them and sell membership to access them through another site as a service?

By the way...isnt everything on this site copyright protected?

NamePros only charges $10 per month for a Business account here. I have been very happy to pay that to NP for everything that they have given me for all these years.

This new NameThreads is charging a ridiculous $10 per month for this simple ripoff - one-off service. Even the name they chose (NameThreads) is a ripoff of "NamePros threads". Not cool, imho.

That would be like if I took every story from (@Acroplex), Theos sites and (@equity78), all of Rays stories from both of his sites and just re-packaged them all up and offered them on my own blog and then on top of that, charged others for them.

I think it would be good for NP to create their own similar service and give that service to Business members. If anyone wanted that as a service then I am sure they would have those people sign up here for that service rather than any outside source trying to capitalize off of their platform here.

I completely agree. Its one thing for a member to make a suggestion, but a different thing for a member(entrepreneur) to take data, repackage it, then charge for it. They might claim the cost is for their tool but without np data it would be useless.. The only thing notable about the storywas that it is using NP data.

@Media Branding - I see what you're trying to say, however these are two different things. Content can be copyrighted, but we're talking about domain listings here.

It's like this site for example that aggregates all of Craigslist and provides a search feature. The difference is, it's free.

To clarify, I voted "no" in the poll, simply because I want control over my sales listings. I'm sure this project raises a few questions about terms and conditions of use regarding NamePros memberships. While I consider it innovative, it's up to NamePros to decide if it violates any of its rules.

@Acroplex, I just looked at that site. Same $hit minus the ballsy $10 per month fee. Ok, it is a bit different. That is an aggregate Craigslist Rip-off site. Still some lazy thief that cannot create any of their own content at all and wants to capitalize off of Craigslists hard work. I don't know the legality of it at all. I would assume it is wrong legally, but whether it is right or wrong legally, it is clear as day to me that they are stealing others very very hard work and money without offering a damn new thing to anyone.

Hey, If NamePros gave this guy their blessing, then well that's that. If they didn't then something has to change.

^^^ This! ^^^
I was about to suggest the same, but open to all "special" members (i.e. except New Members and Established Members).
