Anyone else being overcharged for domain renewal ? I have a website hosted by Weebly and the domain will expire in a few days. Just gone to renew it and they want $47 for one years renewal (it's a com).

It might be to late to transfer it out so it looks like I'll have to cough up :banghead:

wow... that's a lot!

That makes me wonder what my domain name will cost to renew. It's coming up in March... and I bought it along with my Hostgator hosting (I guess "Launchpad" is the domain registrar.)... If it's that high I will transfer to NC.... but I wonder what kind of disruptions I can expect.

Anyone know if this is normal? (Such a high renewal fee?)

domain renewal is beneficial if you are running a business on that domain name even if it is overcharged ....because in the end you need it

High renewal on domains with hosting is a shady practice by these hosting companies because MOST lay people don't know the difference between domain registration and hosting, so they think they will lose their website if they don't keep the domain name with the same company.

@Paul123 - it's NOT too late to transfer - it is against ICANN rules for a registrar to prevent transfer even AFTER expiry

Get your Auth Code ASAP and start the transfer, there's some specials running yet anything is better than $47! Are you sure they aren't tying that in to hosting renewal as well? I can't quite tell, is weebly a reseller of NetSol? If so you may have to jump through some hoops to get the AuthCode faster.

@TerriJ - start now as well, if your site is up and running and you keep the nameservers the same when transferring the name, you should have no downtime switching the domain registrar. It is only when you switch hosting that you can expect downtime and there are some tricks to make it faster. IMO don't do both at once.

I checked @usernamex and hosting is an extra $27 for 6 months. Total $74 for domain renewal and 6 months hosting. I emailed them this morning and have not heard back -- it looks like I'm just going to cough up this year.

My site has a lot of pages but I will try and move it to someone else next year. Is it fairly easy to copy it and move it to another host ?

Best,
Paul

Thanks UNX -- that's very useful. The domain expires on the 19th of this month and the hosting on the 22nd. I've left it until the last minute (my bad) and can't risk any disruption to my site.

Best,
Paul

So how are Namecheap and Namesilo getting away with preventing transfers out after expiration?

@Paul123 - yes for an important site the money difference is worth paying for the peace of mind that nothing goes wonky, sure we all have done the same.

@korganian - they don't actually prevent you from getting Auth Code or transfer, they just have set up in a misleading way or make it so you have to jump through hoops. They are counting on most people to not question it so you renew with them out of fear of losing the name. I have a throwaway name I plan to let expire on purpose at namesilo just to seen how it looks, and how hard it is to get the Auth Code at that time, even though I have the auth code already.
