Hey

I get TONS of emails for web development, SEO etc etc
All because i chose not to have private reg with MOST of my domains up to now.

I keep identifying them as junk, but every day there is a few more in inbox. Getting frustrating to have to look through each one, in case I may be deleting something important that might have ended in junk.

All these whois sites should have captcha codes required to "help" stop this shit. I know some do and some don't.

I think it would be cool to have a community that will share a database of emails used by these service companies to be auto-flagged. What do you think? It is considered spam anyways as we NEVER opted-in to these lists. Really frustrating.

What do you guys do?

Thank you

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I sometimes report the domains in the e-mail to the registrar it is registered with through their Abuse report interface.
However, this does not always work as GoDaddy's abuse report form does not work :-/

As far as I know, contacting an other company is not considered as spam. It applies only for individuals (I am not 100% sure).

In my experience, an email that starts to get serious spam can be considered as dead. There are plenty of blacklist databases that record emails and IP of spammers, but they are not an efficient barrier.

You can try to use gmail (for a fee, gmail handles your email if it's based on a domain you own or control such as John @ DomainYouOwn.com): they have one of the best antispam system and you can reduce the flood of spam, but not eliminate it.

I also use spamfighter. It works on MSOutlook. It's not perfect, but it works fine for a moderately spammed email.

IMHO, captcha would not a be a solution against spam (too easy to crack). 20 years ago, Microsoft claimed spam would be under control within 2-3 years and we know the reality. Probably, the only solution would be a modification of the internet so that email senders pay a significant price to send an email. We can dream...

Getting spam for your domains is part of the job :) No way around that.

Hi

i get the same spam as you, probably 5 > 10 a day

but here's a different perspective i was pondering.

maybe... it could be payback, for all those 'outbound' spam emails that domainers send to end-users.

here's the theory:

since domainers are potential end-users on the development end, these spammers target us, thinking, hoping or feeling that we need or want their services.... just like some of you, send out solicitations to end-users thinking they need or want your names.

as the earth rotates ... what goes around, comes around.

:)

imo...

There is also a joker's way to retaliate: get some SEO / website / design names and reply to spammers, offering them better names for their businesses :)

5-10 a day? Lol I get that just in INBOX, Junk must have 20-30 a day! Haha. Every day I report/send to junk a few that sneaked through into my Inbox haha

I think all WHOIS should be like the one at whois.domaintools dot com
Sometimes you have to select parts of an image that has trees etc as example. If these sites would all adopt that kinda of security I am sure we would have a LOT less spam! :)

I get a dozen plus per day for web dev/seo and that is after spamming most all of them everyday. lol
Luckily I switched my phone number to a google voice line that I have set to not ring but to alert me by email.
So any call that has a message I will listen in case its a buyer but its mostly 3 second hang ups from spammers. But at least my phone isn't ringing off the hook with Indian call centers.

Well, for me all enter in spam folder by default, using gmail for more that 9 years.
But I don't consider them really spam as they want to offer a service for you.

Think the opposide:
You start to search for potential end users and you start to spam them that you have a domain for sale. It's pretty the same :D

To minimize this Indian spam you may try myprivacy.ca for your WHOIS email...
It requires an additional confirmation from the sender...

I will try it later... because too many domains with many registrars... I don't have much time to rewrite WHOIS...

I tried it...

It is a little confusing for somebody to actually want to follow through to send an email. Somebody will have to put in some effort to get their email across. But it will definitely , definitely wean out a lot of spam.

Anyhow thanks again

It's definitely part of this business to get / ignore (more or less) spam emails.

On the other side, I often react with 'counter offers', simply by sending them my offered domain/s - you never know.
But the last time I replied in the following way:

The friendly spam email I got from them:

Of course you can only reply (especially in such way) if you have / take the time.
At that moment I had / took it, and I am sure it was effective in some way.

Well, the best thing you could do is mark them as spam. Email providers have a low threshold for spam, and if more than 0.1-0.2% of the messages they sent are marked as such, they're banned.

The worst thing you could do is just ignore the email. Report it as spam!

not just emails but stupid phone calls...

1st there is a call and the person just asks "is this <your name>".
If you say yes, they hang up and later on that day you get the sales pitch call.
They are not really robo calls because there is a live person on the other end.
It was cool the first couple of times, but I'm sick of them by now.
There is a "rude domainer" thread going on... well that's when I become that guy.

I'm tracking the phone #'s. I call back and get the machine.
Then I call these guys >>> https://www.donotcall.gov/

I'm also marking all the texts as spam.

I don't know if this will help, but if we all do it maybe they will run out of numbers.

And the whole it's all coming from Indians,
Would it make a difference if they had Irish, or Spanish, or Cockney or German accents?
it's just people trying to make a living, just like you and I.
Like what was mentioned above, when domainers email or call prospective clients. It's the same.
Only different. ;)

Peace,
Cy

There are also apps you can get, but I don't know how effective they are.

The worst thing you could do is just ignore the email. Report it as spam!

No, in a 'karma - view', simply ignoring can be better than reporting it.
It is not their Intention to bother us, no - in most cases they are just offering serious, web related services in a friendly way - that's ok for me.
I can react if I am interested or simply ignore if I am not.
No reason for reporting, I don't have spam panic.
If it is not the same company / person / email again and again, I don't see any reason to report them / him / it, that's not the way I think.

We should not forget that we also reaching out others from time to time, offering a / some domain/s which we think that it / they could be in his / her / their interest.
We would not be happy to get directly reported as spam, just for sending a serious, friendly offer.

So I reiterate, it's indeed part of this business and it's not always clear what counts as 'spam' and what not, it's your individual decision how to see it.

On the other side I admit, that my email program (Outlook) works very well and these emails are 99 % landing automatically direct in my junk mail - folder, thats the main point that they don't bother me really.
From time to time I go through those emails and if there is nothing which is in my interest, I simply delete them.

Until now I have never reported someone(s email) just because he sent me an offer.
