What do you guys see happening with .io sales? I am finding very mixed information, with some decent names selling for $35 and others selling for a few thousand, so I can't tell how they are really doing sales-wise. I have several, including some LLL and one or two good keyword domains. Do you anticipate them gaining or losing value over the next 1-2 years? Are they worth holding right now or are they fading away?

I do feel .io is the best choice at this moment...the reason is, it is short and cool, compare with other :

compare with old fashion: like .com, .net, org things....it is cool and represent the new era, and u can find some cool name and even can hand reg the cool name....but for .com, u can only find expensive old name, while more and more new generation choose .io, it will become a trend, people will feel .io is cooler than old guys....

compare with other cctld, like, .de, .cn, .us, it is not like a country-code, it is a global domain, .io is .io, it is not a country code even it actually refer to india ocean, but most people don't look in this way...most people look it as a cool domain..just that

compare with other new top domian, like, .xyz, .blog, .tech, .moda, .cloud, .club, .whatever it is much short and cool....

in a short, I feel .io have its beauty from both techinical and art perspective.....it will become more and more pupular for new generation/startup....but, given it is rep cool, then, it means you should not reg them at a old fasion, like websitebuilder.com may be a good name, but websitebuilder.io may not, similar, afomalindustryname.com is good, but aformalindustryname.io may not good.....so, it will not like .com, it will keep small volume, and rep some thing small, new, unique and cool.....just feel in this way, u know what need to reg and what .io have value and end-user...btw, my own opinion, if its .com version already be very succuss, u may want avoid....there is no too much room for you develop and cool site to compete with that one......

rush to write, may be too may gram/spell mistake, hope still readable.

Thanks for the feedback! I hope more people reply. I'm wondering why I'm having trouble selling any .io domains then, as I have several LLL.io and a few other short names.

I do agree with this. IO is growing fast and stable. It's a second choice (before .COM) for almost technical startup or technical related website.

I don't share most people's enthusiasm for .io

Don't get me wrong .. I do see it as a "generic" TLD (well .. more of a tech "niche" TLD, but I mean it's no longer limited as a ccTLD) .. and I do see it doing much better than most of the newer TLDs. However, I think the success is limited to a limited niche within the tech industry. And while the tech industry is pretty large and I do see small numbers of start-ups paying decent amounts for amazing .io's, I don't see a large number of end users rushing to buy anything but the best tech related key-terms.

Based on those specific potential buyers I think acronyms aren't really going to be in demand .. at least not in volume at the multiples over wholesale that makes domaining viable with $35/yr renewals.

Non-tech generic terms that usually make good brand names I also see as potentially soft in demand .. again .. not zero .. but soft enough that there won't be much of a shortage for even good generic names .. which in turn really will lower prices for non-tech words/terms. On this front I think the similar ccTLD turned gTLD .co is better positioned for generics.

Finally, with a good chunk of startups focused on the growing app industry, I fear the launch of .app could also soften demand for .io.

Seems like a lot of negatives .. however .. if you've got a great single tech word/term I think there's still potential there. Like a lot of the new "themed" TLDs, the value of a .io domain is only there if the left of dot fits good for tech .. otherwise I don't think it's worth the risk/reward.

I think .io is a good investment. Maybe it's only real get-rich scheme out there. However, some effort has to made in selling them. I don't think they have the power of 3 letter .coms.

So what are the valuable names to get? I have a bunch of LLL.io domains, and then a few random keyword ones with some keywords (drone, online TV, bitcoin). I'm just not sure what I should be looking for or how I should be trying to sell them.

Depends on the word, just luck of the draw right now really, unless you got a really good word and held it years.

While I like notdotcom domains, and .io hears well on my ears, I m not very optimistic. First , it has high renewal rate. Second, only start ups related to IT or similar sectors use this extension. Also, meaningless LLL have no value I believe. It is not .com and if they haven t an inner value, that is, a meaning to an end user, they will never sell. The high renewal rate demands higher sales ratio to get a profit. Which does not exist. I mean really, if someone wants to avoid .io aftermarket he really can. So no much sales... And the renewal costs will not be covered.

I suggest think differently while reg .io,give an example I just find, if u start to sell cake, what kind name u should use? cakeseller.com? cakeguru.com, cakemom.com? may be all those name already gone, so, check kak .io to have a look, it is a chinese website sell cake, obviosly, they think kak .io is a cool/afforable name to sell cake, .io is not limited on tech, it can be useful for any type of business, specially for those youny people start new business...

Until it will be successful in China .io remains a too small niche to think of earning money, plus renewal fee is crazy (€ 60 on GD -> $ 70 per year!!).
I really hope .io will be famous in China, otherwise 90% of domain regged (non IT/robotic niche) haven't any value.

If You have some decent names with .io extension, don't sell them right now. Keep a hold on them , maybe in near future you'll get much better price for them

See .io will do better over time but the domain names which you have of LLL or one or two letter domain name will have a huge sale and make large profits.

Really? Huge sale and make large profits?
I own NNN .io (Chinese premium without 0/4) domains, are better than LLL/1 word.
They haven't any traffic in parking, a visit a month/a visit every 2 month (1 VISIT!).
0 offers, 0 sales, 0 inquiries, 0 earnings.
We have to hope .io will be famous in China, otherwise only IT/Robot keywords have value.
For this reason, until that day arrives, 99% of .io domains are garbage.
Sorry to say that, I've invested money in this extension, but reality is reality.

Another empty opinion backed by zero experience and zero figures.

You feel .io is the best choice at the moment right. You feel .io is better than the boring .com right?

Amazing the amount of fluff some people come out with. If you can't be bothered to learn the basics as to why .com is the preferred gtld then you should quit while you're not ahead.

Well, comparison to .com isn't necessarily fair, since that is better than literally any other extension. I was just curious about .io having ANY potential value, and if so, which ones? I see a huge variety in terms of sales, and I just find it very confusing. Please don't comment unless you have something of value to contribute in terms of answering the questions in the original post. I agree, that poster having a "feeling" about a domain is essentially useless, and I didn't need that to be highlighted for me to recognize it as useless. I have asked a sincere question and I'm only interested in answers to that question, no other comments, particularly those only intended to insult another poster.

I agree with the others, .io will only go up over time. It's new, it's short, it's cool/trendy. .com's are overrated, overpriced and saturated. As they they gradually lose they're power I think .io will be one of their biggest competitors.

I watch sales daily and I happen to only have a few .io domain names but looking at May sales, .io sold quite well compared to other extensions excluding .com, .net and .org....

.io is one of the best extension for startups..

Just as an FYI related to .io... the registry is changing to Afilias (away from CDNS) on June 10. Afilias is the registry for many popular TLDs like .info, .me, etc. I would expect that this will help the market awareness for .io domains since many registrars will be able to offer .io who have not done so yet as many integrate with Afilias but not with CDNS. There is no anticipated change in pricing at this time, but the more universal adoption and exposure for .io will likely help with domain sales. This change also applies to .ac and .sh.
