What domain will you be kicking yourself for not buying 5 years from now?

We can all sit around and see the obvious (in hindsight) value of the 1994-1998 one word domain registrations. We can wonder how lucky it was to get Free one word .com registrations in the early 90's and what kind of value that would bring to everyday bills.

The truth is the people that registered those names saw value where others didn't and were smart enough to take advantage.

Now what domain reg or purchase available today will make new domainers in 2022 say, "you had it so easy, there were so many _____________dot_________ availabable!"

The truth is we don't know for sure. It will take a few different strategies, most likely excellent .com domains will continue to rise in value. Investing in strong names with low $9 renewal costs is safer than buying 40 new gTLD that renew at high prices.

So from the new gTLD's it will most likely be ones that get to scale and have a low enough renewal cost to keep mindshare.

Would any of you disagree that
1) Short numeric .com will keep growing in value
2) Short LLL and LLLL will keep growing in value
3) One word .com names will keep growing in value

But where is the less obvious investment?

Coincidence that you created this thread. I have a domain in my "sights" right now that I know I will kick myself in the future if I don't get it now. The guy wanted $3000 for it. but I bargained him down to $2100 afterwhich I kinda went "ghost" on him and he hasn't harrassed me about it.

$2100 is still a huge amount for me. it would be my first "aftermarket" purchase. something I never do.

but I'm very excited about this domain. I've seen comps for something similar to it selling for $35 million (Developed).

I could get this domain for $2100. throw in another $1000 to "develop" and then wait.

oh and prepay renewals for the next 20 years or so.

and just wait. would be a nice nest egg for sure.

can't say much more as might tip people off on here.

I might have already lost the domain or the guy might ask for more now out of spite for making him wait so long.

again $2100 is no small chunk of change.

the domain is aged since 2004 so I guess it's worth it?

edit : oh and it is a .com.

I think new extensions is a market that is not yet exploit and has a lot of potential. People are just starting to realise that.

I'm on the "fence" since many of the "big boys" i.e. Mike Mann adamantly show disgust for new extensions and keep repeating it on his blogs and his linkedin account.

and also Frank Schilling dumping millions of new extension domains from his inventory.

yes I said millions or was it hundreds of thousands?. I read it somewhere here? I think?

Yikes dude, if you are certain the domain is that good.....maybe you should get back to this dude like quickly...lol - Hell even you have to pay the full price of $3000 ...assuming your research is right then it's still a good deal... off course extra $900 is a lot of money no doubt... but even if u use the extra $1000 u wanted to use on development just to acquire the domain for now... then development you don't have to rush, you can develop when you have the funds at a later stage....considering it could be a potential nest egg.

that's a good question!

i say, learn from the past and look at what was selling 5 years ago at lower price ranges.

many newbies fall to look long range, when they have "flip mentality".

even if they buy a decent name today, they'll try to sell it , even before the "60 day" lock time is up.
:)

so, how will they have or ever acquire the patience to "hold" a name for 5 years, until it matures into something really desirable?

and... when they're being taught to blatantly spam these newly hand-regged names today, without giving the slightest thought to what would those same names be worth.... 5 years from now?

just saying.

imo....

@biggie excellent reply. Looking at the past overlooked value can help for sure :)

After seeing that thebahamas.com sold for $3k I'm thinking there are a lot of deals left out there to find. All winter in many Northern cities the bahamas song plays on the radio enticing people to go on a trip. I think that name is at least $30k and it sells for $3k so someone put in some good work there.

Love seeing these hidden gems and deals.
