Early summer 2015 I hand-registered a name in the dot-one extension. Nowadays, most of my domain name investments are nTLD's geared to long-term holds or a novelty collection. In this case, I wasn't planning much other then letting it sit for a few years. But lo and behold, a couple months later I received a firm offer, and it was good one. Sale went through without a hitch, and received $2500 for an $11 investment. My return was almost 25,000 percent.
I usually never check back on a name after I have sold it. But a few months ago I did a query on it and noticed it had expired! I was like, "Whaddup with that??". $2500 bucks for a name isn't chump change, why would someone pay that and then let it expire? Anyhow, for sh*ts n' giggles decided to keep track of the name manually, no backorders.
The 80th day came with it being expired and in pending delete status. Queried it midday, holy smokes it was available! Snatched it up, and here we are..
Now, my first inclination as to why this happened is that original sale was never intended for anything other than to "inject" hype into the newly released dot-one extension. The purchaser likely knew the sale would be reported, because although it was a private sale, it was finalized through a large, well-known venue. But then I did a reverse query on the owners email, interested in seeing what else they were into. The owner has about 200 domains, most of them sub-par names that I would expect from a beginner, not a serious investor. Strange thing is, every name he/she has up to this point in time is in expired status. So now I'm inclined to believe that some life-altering event has occurred to the previous owner, incapacitating him to renew his domains.
Whatever the case, there's the story of a handreg, to a sale, to a handreg again on the same name. How often does something like this occur? It's a first for me. Will lightning strike twice in the same spot? Odds are nope, but I'm happy with owning the name once again.
