A quick google search shows the race to build these flying cars/taxis

I don't think it's too far away

Airbus takes a step closer to driverless ‘flying taxis

"I'm no big fan of Star Wars, but it's not crazy to imagine that one day our big cities will have flying cars making their way along roads in the sky," Tom Enders said in the article.

Airbus offers a peek at its flying taxi

European aerospace giant Airbus has quietly lifted the curtain on an ambitious Silicon Valley project called Vahana. It's a pilotless passenger aircraft that aims to someday add a vertical component to your commute.

Think of Uber-like air taxis that can beat the traffic on Highway 101 by flying over it

I agree with you FX, it's not too far away.

Inside Uber’s Plan to Take Over the Skies With Flying Cars

IN LESS THAN a decade, Uber has redefined the idea of flexible labor and gutted the American taxi industry. The company launched a fleet of self-driving cars in Pittsburgh. It’s on its way to becoming the most valuable startup ever.
Whatever. Today, Uber is promising flying cars.

Flying Cars
Within a decade, according to a 99-page white paper released today, Uber will have a network—to be called “Elevate”—of on-demand, fully electric aircraft that take off and land vertically. Instead of slogging down the 101, you and a few other flyers will get from San Francisco to Silicon Valley in about 15 minutes—for the price of private ride on the ground with UberX. Theoretically.

Takeoff
Believe it or not, building a flying car isn’t the hardest part of this scheme. Within five years, according to the white paper, Uber expects the market to produce a fully electric, vertical-takeoff-and-landing plane that can fly 100 miles at about 150 mph, carrying multiple passengers and a pilot.

EVTOLs

First picture of what is believed to be Larry Page’s electric VTOL aircraft

The first electric and VTOL aircraft by Zee.Aero, a startup reportedly heavily funded by Google co-founder Larry Page, is believed to have been spotted at the Hollister Airport in California, where the company has a hangar.

The aircraft has been called a ‘flying car’, but the term should really be retired since the vehicle has little to do with a car. It’s a battery-powered aircraft capable of vertical take-off and landing (VTOL).

The picture above was recently taken by Steve Eggleston, who works next to the airport, and he claims to have seen the aircraft hover quietly over the tarmac before being able to take the picture. The vehicle was quickly brought back inside Zee.Aero’s building.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Google co-founder and Alphabet CEO, Larry Page, was financing two separate startups with over $100 million to compete in developing their own electric aircraft designs. Zee.Aero is one of those companies.

Your future commute: Flying through tubes at 760 mph

Picture the commute of the future: You live in Palo Alto, Calif., but work 350 miles away in Los Angeles. After your morning latte, you click on a smartphone app to summon your digital chauffeur. An autonomous car shows up at your front door three minutes later to drive you to a Hyperloop station in downtown Mountain View, where a pod then transports you through a vacuum tube at 760 mph. When you reach the Pasadena station, another self-driving car awaits to take you to your office. You reach your destination in less than an hour.

That is the type of scenario that Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) chief executive Dirk Ahlborn laid out for me as we were preparing to speak together on a panel at the Knowledge Summit in Dubai on Dec. 5. He was not talking about something that would happen in the next century; he expects the first of these systems to be operational in the United Arab Emirates by 2020.

Passenger drones anyone???

http://www.usatoday.com/story/trave...r-carrying-drones-could-flying-july/97850596/

On a side note, I'm personally not looking forward to flying transportation as people have enough trouble paying attention and being aware of their surroundings on a horizontal plane without the requirement to keep an eye on what's going on above and below them.

In fact if flying cars become a reality, I think I'll be moving to an underground bunker and having everything delivered as I will be to scared to death to step outside due to all the falling debris from mid-air accidents.

A flying car is a type of personal air vehicle that provides door-to-door transportation by both road and air. The term "flying car" is often used to include roadable aircraft and hovercars.

Voted 'Other': because I think the concept is 'car' but the reality is 'passenger drone'... as driving a car and flying a car is a pilot's license distinction... on all fronts -from insurance to security. So private plane & helicopter ownership rates apply.
However, Autonomous "Passenger Drones" are taking-off... as Dubai just made Ehang legal, and there are Prototypes for everything from 'Standing Drones', to Jetson inspired designs. So dreams do come true @briguy

BTW, I recently made a post in the Drone thread about a guy who made a drone, for only $7k, that let him hang-on and fly. And I've seen others:
