Has anyone has any experience with selling to car dealerships?

In my dealings with them they tend to be the least internet-aware people next to people in the pet/animal industry. I've made a few sales in this niche, but I find that it's not worth the time acquisition costs and effort to educate someone who can barely use their eMail.

I just got an eMail from a high-end dealership where the GM accidentally sent the message to me instead of his sales manager and stated; "it's a domain name scam."

The only other time I have every gotten that kind of response was, you guessed it, a car dealership.

I'm done with that niche; how about you?

What kind of automotive domain sales have you made?

What was your experience?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
You can thank the mass spammers for that. End users have been bombarded with domain spam for years.
You know, we get the same spam too.

But maybe you could improve your mail to instill more confidence. Maybe.

It's true, in some industries people are more aware than others.

That's what most people would say at first glance, however It's 100% not the content of the message.

My same outbound message has been used with billion dollar companies down to small business operations; with excellent results and conversions.

It's also not just the part where Mr.CarGuy thinks it's a scam, it's that I find with dealerships you have to 'hold their hand' though the process with minimal ROI.

Just not a niche I find worth doing outbound. Inbound is a different story of course.

lol, very true. Hey, would you like to own Kateeee99.xyz for the low price of $399? Hurry before someone else grabs this premium pronounceable highly desirable domain.

They're cheap, don't understand type-in traffic and don't care too.

They will happily use a .net. or .biz instead of paying $500 for the .com. 99% of their lot traffic comes from local walk-ins and craigslist.

New dealers would rather spend 10K on a Sunday newspaper advert. Used car dealers are even worse.

If your car domains have traffic redirect them to edmodns.com affiliate program.

Your assessment is accurate. I guess it is just one of those industries that still has room to grow.

Domains don't matter to their advertising model.

1) There is a shortage of used cars. They don't have to advertise b/c people are looking. $5 for a two week craigslist ad will bring in more then enough people.

2) They buy leads from companies that aggregate leads from multiple websites so they never have to pay for the same lead twice.

3) Re-marketing works. Search for a car, Google and Facebook will show you ads for weeks.

@Doughmange, I am in the same situation as you. Have been trying to sale smartcardealersdotcom with no success. I have sent over 500 emails to potential end users and yet no response. That niche is not worth it.

Would you mind sharing your outbound message (via PM if you like) with me?. Would love to get a good example.

The whole car sales process is a choreographed dance where the dealer and salespeople know the steps -- and the buyer doesn't. Take a look at "Don't get taken every time." to see how the game is played. It is heavily dependent on personal interactions and online interaction isn't part of the dance yet.
