co.uk names are changing - .uk is now a suffix in its own right.

Not the answer to your question, but something to be aware of if you are looking at uk names.

are you saying .uk names are trending more than .co.uk now and anyone no matter the location can register it?

No, I'm saying that you need to be careful if you are reg'ing a co.uk, because someone could come along and reg the.uk.

I don't know if they are trending, as I invest mainly in .coms. I've started to experiment with .xyz names as feeder sites recently though.

I once tried to register a UK-ext domain few months ago. It said it's open only for UK citizens. You need to submit documents to prove you're a UK citizen.

.co.uk: no restrictions
.uk: need a local address. Not hard to arrange

Indeed, .co.uk have no residence restrictions - I own some. I registered them at GoDaddy. This also resulted in automatic opening of an account at nominet.org.uk

you can register .co.uk domains using any registrar with a "trustee" service in which they have satellite offices in the countries of which that GTLD you are trying to register represents. usually it's a free service while others charge. so shop around. also for .uk unless you own the .co.uk. it's impossible to get. also. if you get lucky and GET a .co.uk you automatically get first shot at the .uk.

or so I'm told.

I just tried registering a .UK domain through a European Registry (it's currently pending). I think it is odd that they will take the payment, when the buyer and billing address are based in the USA.

I am new to domaining, so not really sure what the outcome of this will be, or where to go from here if I were able to register successfully.

@Kate How would one go about arranging a UK address for a .uk domain?

Scanmypost.co.uk or some sort of maildrop service. Like those used by expats.

I own a few UK domains - TradeBitcoins, BitcoinTrade, VRMovies, ARPhone, VRFootball, VRHD and many more. PM if you are interested.
