The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Dot com will continue to be the top extension for quite a while.

It is the main and established extension and used by most medium to large companies.

New g's will get there - but slowly.

I don't think the new g's will overtake dot coms ever or at least for the near future.

.Web :xf.wink:

the reason is simple :

there are so many new domainers

.Web is a very good chance to get good names
and also do some business

the old school guys with a bunch of .com are just scare that the value of their domains will drop

and they will drop ...

:xf.smile:

let,s get rid of the King...

I think they are worried and for good reason.

Frank Schilling is no idiot and he has bet big on the new g's.

But he also owns many dot coms too.

In time the new g's will do better but dot coms are not going to be overtaken by the new g's any time soon.

I was skeptical about the new g's in the beginning, but I think they are doing better and will become a part of the accepted domain extensions in time, but not all.

Only a few will make it and most new g's will fail and fade away.

There are only a small group of new g's that will survive.

yes...

i like .company also

it is a long one but a perfect match to Companies

Google just bought X.Company and moved SolveForX.com to it ...

.COM always the best extension over the time. However I also think .WEB is rising and become important recently.

New g's are doing good, but it is not to say they are going to get rid of the .com in the nearest furure. Don't think so at all. From all indications, the new g's are even given more powers to .coms far more than what it used to be before. Almost all Chinese companies have possesd their .com domains and some are still looking to get their .com even when they have their ccTLDs versions.
Domainers are not the determinants of domain extensions in the market but, they auth to buy what is trendy and good for sales.

How dare you talking about Elvis like that! :|

Even Elvis has .com - elvis.com. What will he say if he misses elvis.com; that would be disastrous for him.

Elvis.rock is good, but he can not afford to miss elvis.com. But he could miss elvis.rock and nothing will happen.

i will write my opinion

long time ago who start to given ".com" those value ? Answer [ Companies ] .

i think .company will make the value of .com down every year . when the companies start to use .company it will make the value of .com weak everyday .

.com will be so weak 2018 - 2020.
.company will be more active 2018

Good luck for everyone

I always catch heat from saying this: have you ever seen some of the generic extensions people are selling? Some of these domains make absolutely no sense. Like blah blah blah . top, .cloud, .whatever.

If you have a keyword like "server.cloud" or something like that, then okay, you want to sell hosting or something in that niche, you probably have a fair chance. Not like cloudserverblahblah.com, which is great. Even though it's a long winded .com, you can remember it.

I don't care whatever hipster is telling me drones, generic extensions, and whatever is taking over. I consider so many random extensions spam.

Especially, .xyz, so many popups are used with the .xyz extension like I said before.

I even developed a .cc domain. ---- worthless ----

200 domains in my portfolio.. All dot .com, .net, .org, and keyword .biz --- And I have one .today domain which is a big keyword and I took a chance on it.

You can't make money by guessing and randomly typing in words and generic extensions: you're wasting your time and money.

So the longer, more narrow and descriptive tld will over take the king?

Do you ever wonder why none of the experienced domainers agree with you?

Stop dreaming and look at the stats man! Learn, rather than trying to grow the bubble everyday, you are only hurting others that are new to the game. They will lose $$$ because of this rubbish.

All that's understood, no one is skipping the statistics or acting fanatic. But with this rejecting attitude of the new TLDs from the domainers community itself, I guess they will eventually turn themselves into website developers just to give their remaining exotic names at hand a brand value to sell, or better off quit the business altogether.

.com has almost reached infeasible namespace saturation. Those "experienced gurus" are just flipping hot balls that grow in value to a scorching degree.

If I could change people minds about the new TLDs by embracing them first as a domainer, then that's good business for everyone.

Still one problem to conquer is a matter of perception as you pointed out:

Elvis.com
or
Elvis.club etc..

That historical mistake needs to be corrected first in the minds of domainers because they are the ones who set the playground.

Elvis.com
or
Elvis.club etc

No sane person would think elvis.music or elvis.club is better than Elvis.com

If one does please see a shrink soon because this can help you avoiding losing a lot of money.

I think wishful thinking coupled with greed is slowly getting out of control.

There are still few nGTLD sales after a few years and they have yet to be shown a proven investment.

Some already talk as if not only the success was a given but also .com was already worthless.

Reminds one of the Internet bubble talk in the late nineties and we all know how that ended.

You can't make money by guessing and randomly typing in words and generic extensions: you're wasting your time and money.

Really great input: Appreciate sharing your experience.

So here is the hard question:

Are those new TLDs really "generic"?

Probably no.

So why they call them generic?

Because they couldn't find better alternatives?
All the files on your computer have extensions to them. They need to invent something new. So they come up with those fantastic extension for your rusty domains.

According to what you hinted, we have three major problems:

1. Phonetic problem
2. Semantic problem
2. Scope problem

When I say

Falafel.com which "sounds" good when I "pronounce" it and I don't care much about the com "meaning" to the right of the dot

which is not like

Falafel.phone that immediately triggers a question!

phonetically it "sounds" like stuttering because the "." in between really counts here, why? Because phone is a whole word that has a meaning. That why the dot counts.

If it's falafel.ph for example, maybe it will sound good right?

Because there's no apparent connection between falafel and phone! Unless you have to order them by phone, then, there's no clear link between them .

So cloudserverblahblah.com is better than cloudserver.blahblah

Because the latter "sounds" again like stuttering !

We agree on that. That .Com is good, but why?

hmmm

Because we have the entire main keyword(s) on the left of the dot, and com to the right of the dot. AND "COM" DOESN'T TRIGGER an unsolicited question regarding its meaning .

Yes it's truly generic extension. because...?

Because it's com..is it's an abbreviation for commercial?..maybe communication, combination?, or etc etc..

That's right..because it's vague.

Simply because extension should be generic with vague meaning, we have problem with those new TLDS as some of them are explicit words. And words have meanings of their own, be it broad or specific.

Some registrars don't even call them generic because they were the first to think about it clearly. If they have to provide the user with a drop-down list of a hilarious number of new extensions they will be then creating confusion for the uninitiated buyers who know only .Com, .Net, .Org, to name more..

That's why they just call them newTLDs not gTLDs.. still some will want you to believe that and other dared to put them under categories, because they thought it would better for search engines to recognize and index those domains by niches..

- Food
- Health
- etc

But they made a mistake by putting some small extensions in categories:

like .xyz. .vet, etc

They should have made them like those country shortcuts..mostly vague..yes indeed

So if .Com is good because it conquered all the above obstacles, why .Info, .Org are less of kings?

Because people think .Info is of a very clear meaning..of course besides some other known reasons about the original investors..anyway

.Org ? Got unfair disadvantage because people think it's for non-profit "organization" by definition.

But it's trustworthy and you can even establish business indirectly through it.

So the next logical path of our choices down the list of hell should be .Net! We should buy much of it.

Umm..No

Also due to historical events, paranoid business owners were always tempted to secure .Com, .Net and .Co just to eliminate any backfire..to cover their butts from any possible competition on the same name..like trademarks are not enough for them..so .Net has also suffered an infeasible namespace saturation

.Co is nice..only two letters..people should like it...

NOOOOOO

Because it resembles .Com it should be the crown prince..YESS!

NOOOOOO

who needs that co co ! LoL

It sounds less mature..less of the great COM! Something missing about it..the great M!

That's enough writing:

So in my humble opinion, it all boil down to "semantic", "phonetic", and "scope"

That leads us to the same conclusion someone earlier noted in other words

Which new TLD will survive the wild web in the long run?

.Com is king?

Not anymore..especially for new domainers

You better love those new TLDs, and know how to find names that ring a bell because they really sell..and one day some of them will be real gems..overlooked in today

.COM IS KING!
Once upon a time maybe..that king used to satisfy our mouths with its super glottal "CA" sound, it's powerful..it's reliable..it's KING!

You forgot the left of the dot, you only care about the right of the dot.

It's a dead king who stopped to mingle with the common, and only lives among the "experienced gurus", and deep pocket investors. Old and pricey. And very UGLY

The only king I knew last lived in Graceland.

I saw him too..

Very alive!

LoL

I just wanted to feed in a useful input. Not into Red or Blue parties.
I agree, but what do you suggest for a better domaining ecosystem?

.Com or .Club will rank equally in search like the rest of TLDs.
No? :cautious:
