I'm trying a mix of CMS on a variety of names, and my biggest problem at the moment is spammers. Surfer interaction sectrions include guest books, forums, comments, image hosting, URL shortening, classified sales, and e-commerce sites. I've set registration to requiring admin approval following email confirmation, but I'm still ending up with pages of applications. It can take ages to delete them all if the CMS doesn't have a bulk deletion facility.

I'm thinking of implementing two methods of combating this.
- redirecting all Russian traffic to a Russian landing site - is there a way to monetise this?
- having a central membership site, and adding members to various sites by hand, or maybe allowing logins for all sites based on the "club" membership.

Has anybody else solved this problem?

email spam is another problem, but I'm just black holing all of the domain emails.

I think I'm going to focus more on static sites with RSS, and other, feeds, rather thasn interactive ones. You get far more treaffic with the interactive sites, but it may not be worth the effort of moderation.

Try adding a custom field to your registration form. Some simple math formula is usually enough to break bots.

Most of the CMS seem to include a choice of difficulty for captcha checking, The harder it is, the more likely you are to lose signups, but that doesn't really matter if it's just for a guestbook or comment list. The worst problem is the number of posting attempts from people with marginal english, and living in low income countries. Their posts are usually drivel, and relate to products with which I do not want the site to have an association.

I'm probably going to invent some surfers, and make my own posts. I think it's going to involve a lot less effort.

I think I answered similar question somewhere here on the forum in the past.

In a nutshell, spam bots are having free ride on your sites.
Use captcha to protect the forms. Better still, use anti-flood snippet or script to limit the maximum number of form submissions from same IP within a given time lapse.
That's what I use on my parked domains with contact forms.

What makes you think the spammers are from Russia?
In these days of public proxy servers and sophisticated VPNs, any internet user can easily hide his/her true location. In fact, that's what most spam bots do.

Well it doen't really matter where they come from - it's where the server thinks they are, that's really all I've got to go on. There are also a lot of RU pseudo-email addresses.

It's very light and simple, yet effective.

Bots use algorithms which can break any captha (or at least most of them). The best solution is to write your own script and add some custom filed to the reg form like a math formula (see example: marcinwielicki.pl/kontakt.php). They rather won't update their bots to access your customized blogs as they are targeting known scripts.
