While everyone has their way to make money in domaining, there is a lot of money to be made in hand registrations and the reason that I am stressing on it is because newbies can get a head start by investing in hand registrations.
I have recently made 5 sales out of a total of 18 hand registrations that I did. All this within 12 days and the returns are pretty good.

This has only reaffirmed my belief into hand registrations and I believe that the potential is immense.
If you have similar experience investing in hand registrations and getting good returns out of it, would you care to share it?

This will be educational in the form of opportunities that are there in hand registrations.

I find hunting for hand regs intellectually stimulating, and a bit like treasure hunting. Unfortunately it seems to take a lot of time, as I try to resist reg'ing that look great at the time, but 5 minutes later, I think " why did I do that ". :)

If I get a chance, I may try for some traffic names, and put the ones I don't want up for a low-price auction. Virtually all of my names are hand regs that I made at some time in the past.

Interesting. But could you share how you approach selection of names to hand-reg? Thanks.

I'm holding onto many of my hand regs for the right time. They are primarily marijuana-niche domains whose time will come soon. (I'm not trying hard to sell right now.) But, there is definitely still money left out there for registration. With my latest sale, I sold a $1 hand reg for $200 about a month after registration. Not too bad ROI. The buyer purchased it from my website.

In regards to actually registering a hand reg, most of the time I will wait overnight. The next morning, that "sinkdog" might not look that great, especially if I had been drinking. (Sinkdog is just an example. I did not look to register it.)

I've given up trying to find names from a zero base. I've reg'd a couple of names recently one - RoamerWiFi.com came from a discussion on a camping forum. I wondered if it was available, did a quick whois search, and registered it when I saw that it was. Hopefull I can set up a site about using public WiFi. The other one AdaptCars.com came from a discussion about finding domain names. I was illustrating the use of lean domain search, and used cars as an example. When I saw that Adapt cars was available, then I grabbed it for a site about car conversions for diabled people, and about driverless conversions.

I would classify both of those names as usable, rather than great or valuable.

Where would we be without the ability to hand reg? I too have grabbed some great domains, and resold at profit so can't be all that bad!

I say 99% of my names are hand regs.

My approach is geo + niche names. Lets consider a hot niche like gaming. And the cities that they are popular in. Then doing a quick Google search and finding the possible leads. If there are enough, I go for registering them.

I think thisis a good approach. Market specialisation is applied in most industries, but not much in the domain name world. Many domainers don't even specialise in .com names. If you know, research, and build contacts in a particular sector, then you are less likely to make mistakes, and you should find it easier to find customers who are prepared to pay market prices.

I love hand reg. But you have to do your research before you pull the trigger. Look for reasons not to register it. I do searches at many sites to make a decision.
Its not as easy as seeing everyone else register the presidents name, so i will do it. Its not hard to put some effort into it, and as cj6 said, write it down and see how it looks in the morning. If its available now probably available in 8 hours.

That's the problem. It's not always the case that the name will be available later on. I've missed a few domains that way.

What I have found to be the best way to avoid regging domains I will later regret is to ask myself if I'm prepared to register them for 3+ years and do so if I decide to go for it.

Handregs are useful if you search for for, have multiple end users. Also many domains sold on BrandBucket are handregs.

Pick quality over quantity, you'll find many. Do your research before registering any.

I have missed out an more than a few too. C'est la vie..
Most of my hand reg were drops from 3-5 years ago, so they were available the next day.
If not, time to find something else.

My all domains I got was from handreg, however I got a lot of money from selling these, not only a domain but also a website (domain + website + hosting)

Of course there's money to be made via hand registering domains. But personally, it's taken hundreds of hours researching future trends and then waiting a few years to finally profit. But in under five years I've now made sales close to $80k solely from hand reg's alone.

The recent .com hand regs I've acquired were primarily purchased for use as re-directs to existing websites.

I'll acquire various hand regs to attract visitors ( potential customers ) to a specific page or to
items available to purchase.

I buy the hand reg names, the names bring in a few customers/clients every so often, so their purchase is fiscally justified and all is well.

For my domain purposes, that is " money - in - hand " using hand regs, plus whatever residual value that hand reg name might incur.

Also have began acquiring some food-type related .com hand regs that are speculative though if mentioned 'em someone would say " I've tried that ".

And found a few other .com hand regs I was pleased to toss some hand reg fee money at.

What is the best way to increase the chances of selling generic 2-word domains?
I've listed mine at Sedo, but it's impossible to find them unless searching for the exact name. Of course, if one has 500+ domain portfolio, it's likely that some of the domains will be sold. But I believe the rate is closer to 1-5% in a year, not 27% in a month, like the OP said.

Although I these days buy names from the aftermarket, too, I still hand reg most of my names. And I sell A LOT of them with zero outbound @ minimum $500. The trick is not to search for domain names that you think might be available, but to search for names that you're absolutely sure are taken. And do nothing else.

Not quantity over quality but quantity to find quality.

There can be some money to be made with hand regs, but I wouldn't say "lots of money." Maybe $20-$200 if you are lucky. If you reg 100 of them MAYBE one will sell. Don't know if selling handregs is a viable way to make income. It is too easy to lose a whole lot of money on reg fees. I noticed that nobody who said that they make lots of money by selling handregs listed a single domain name that they sold. (I did see some who did mention what they registered) I hardly ever see any specific names mentioned, and that is bothersome. How can you promote this to anyone, especially newbies, when you can't or won't refer to a single domain you sold as one you handregged? Anyone can say they made $xxx or $xxxx by selling a handreg, but did they really sell it?

There is a actually a far greater potential ROI with hand registered domains than there is with any other investment-grade/premium domain. They can actually help fuel the larger purchases whilst leaving plenty of profit on the tables.

Examples of some of our hand regs/sales last/this week include:

ArizonaDetoxCenters dot com
Cost: hand reg
Sales price: $300

Audio-Equipment dot co.uk
Cost: hand reg
Sales price: $150

WeBuySilverCoins dot com
Cost: hand reg
Sales price: $300

BehavioralHealthArizona dot com + 4 other hand reg names
Cost: 5 x hand reg
Sales price: $650

RebrandingExperts dot com
Cost: hand reg
Sales price: not yet sold, but received interest yesterday after a $750 quote

ExecutiveAddictionTreatment dot com
Cost: hand reg
Sales price: $250

We paid less than $50 for all the above domains. Marketing time/efforts to factor in: 15-20mins/domain.

The prices are not out-of-this-world, but they all add up.

Thanks for sharing this. And I do know from reading your postings in the completed sales thread that you are transparent about your sales. It is appreciated. Unless your buyer requests a nondisclosure agreement, there is no reason not the share the sales, especially when there are ways to list the name without it being picked up by search engines.

I am not saying that we have to disclose every sale we've ever made on here, but if we are asserting that there's money to be made in handregs, then we should be able to share at least one name that we sold and how much it sold for.
