So it's Nov 4th 2016. Getting close to Thanksgiving and the holiday season. Is this the worst time of the year for domain sales? I mean is this the worst time of the year(End of the year) to try to proactively promote and sell domains? or does it matter? and domaining happens all year round? Anyone have yearly historical sales data to back up you answer? Ii'm going to assume thee obvious. That people are saving their money and not buying domains at this time if the year. Saving money for gifts this season.

What do you think? Thanks.

Best time of the year.

Presents are already bought and hotel reservations already made; I'm just waiting for domainers that are desperate for sales due to their poor planning. ;)

I had a friend who was chairman of a chain of furniture retailers. Whenever they opened a new store, it was always on Boxing day. The logic behind this was - the family is together at Christmas, and can discuss family issues. They probably aren't working on Boxing day, and can go out as a group to select new furniture.

Now to relate this to the domain business. I'm sure some sales will suffer over the holiday period, but it also provides a selling/buying opportunity. I'm sure that you can trhink of numerous example.

- Father wants to buy a domain name to help offspring to start a business.
- Somebody wants to buy a vanity name for a friend/relative
- Family wants to start an on-line business, and have discussed this over Christmas
- Investor wants to find alternative areas to invest his savings.
- Guy is bored by the party chat, and sits down at the computer to find some names to buy.
- Christmas costs too much, so someone wants to sell a domain name to cover the expense.

etc. etc...

Does anyone know what the new registration figures are for the Christmas period?

The idea is that you are thinking at domaining as something personal. No working father or student friend will pay xxx or higher for a name and I don't think that you will want 20$ for a name, you can get that here at namepros. Usually, at this time is closing year for business, so they will spend what money they have left so that they dont pay to much taxes. Also, it-s the perfect time to make plans for the next year and see what other names they need for next year plans. It's a good time for domaining, much better than summer and some other dead months. Also, it's the perfect time to buy from domainers who didn't plan everything earlier.

people are in buying mode, looking for deals, marketing departments still have some budget left, small business owners want to reduce taxes

Resellers on this forum and others will be buying during the holidays (most will be looking for deals), but as for end users I've personally found sales do drop this time of the year. Tons of different reasons I personally believe are behind this..
Taxes, end of the Business Quarter, and Bonuses - It's the end of the year. Companies need to start planning for taxes, reporting of Q4 earnings, and bonuses. Many companies will slow things down this time of the year to prepare for some or all of that. Once the new year hits they can start spending again but for now they need money to pay the tax man, bonuses to give employees for the year, and for those bigger companies they may want earnings to be high and costs to be low for investors (I'm guessing this type of thing would probably only apply to companies buying 6 or 7 figure type domains)
Holidays and Vacation - People travel for Thanksgiving and Christmas so it's the time of year allot aren't spending as much time on the PC or doing work. If you are emailing a ton of end users then some might not even see your email for a few days.

Unless you work in retail I think things are generally slower for everyone this time of year. Even regular office jobs slow down the pace this time of the year and it's probably got to do with some of the reasons above.

I think alot of sales will be done between domainers closer to the festive season...

Some domainers will be selling of a few of their domains really cheap to get funds for the festive season and some domainers will be waiting to buy those domains at bargain prices.

I don't know when exactly is the end of the financial year in US, but in most EU countries is at the end of the year, when you pay taxes as high as you have left money in your account, so most of the owners buy cars, plots of lands for next year developments and so on, to lower the taxes, but this apply mostly to small to medium companies and usually they are the one paying mid xxx to high xxxx. For xx or xxxxx sales it's not so important anymore.

The fiscal year start in April in the UK.

You guys are overlooking the massive new areas created by the current political changes.

- The US presidential election is going to cause a lot of changes whoever gets in.
- Brexit will present massive economic gains for the UK as it shakes off the yoke of the disintegrating EU. The recent high court decision has just expanded the potential for internet sites.
- The massive volume of toxic debt in the world is going to bring down many banks - there's a lot of potential there.

The holidays will be a time for people to reflect on their future, and act accordingly.

Again 'brexit'....I will want to see UK paying taxes the same as China or US when exporting goods in EU or when UK and EU banks with headquarters in UK will loose all EU customers. It will not be good for nobody, but at least the other big countries from EU can deal between them. Think about how many products from EU you can see in UK supermarkets(99% made in UK)....so EU will not be very affected regarding exports and for sure most big banks will be happy to get rid of the competition from UK banks. I think that after the negoctiations fail, EU will make life for UK companies even harder than for chinese companies. We will wait and see...that way this industry is so entertaining...nobody knows exactly what will happen so nobody has any advantage.

as soon as the British Parliament really needs to get involved (due to the High Court's order, see latest news) the Brexit will just stay a ghost and UK will remain in the EU and not destroy the future of all the younger generations..

Nope, that is wishful thinking IMO.

If the supreme court doesn't overturn the ruling of the high court which it may, then Corbyn has said he will block the vote from going through without certain key conditions being met before the vote (such as access to the free market, no restriction on movement of workers which BTW is one of the main reasons most voted Brexit).

In any event the government have said they will not reveal their hand and tell the EU what we are looking for before article 50 is even triggered. What happens next is likely a snap general election and Labour will get crushed based on current polls (latest polls show Conservatives around 15% ahead) meaning Conservatives get a huge majority and push through the vote and possibly hard Brexit or whatever they want with nothing to stop it. Brexit is going to happen whether we like it or not, it won't be stopped but may get a bit delayed depending on the supreme court ruling early December.

Anyway this is off topic, back to the OP, this time of year is still strong overall, still getting plenty of end user inquiries and offers my end and generally i've noticed little change to sales until late December/early January which as others have mentioned becomes a buying opportunity.

I think that depend upon the domain you are trying to sell and to whome

Yes, business owners are on vacation so not a good time to try to email them. The week before a holiday and the week after are pretty bad. So Very little time to try in December with the after Thanksgiving time and then the upcoming Christmas and New Years.
