Im closing in on a deal for my first domain. The buyer contacted me via email and now I have an offer to work with.

Question is how does one sell it securely? How do you sell it given this scenario?

Im playing this extremely cautiously due to scams and fraudsters.

Is Escrow the best way?

Thanks in advance

yes - just do the transaction at Escrow.com. You might want to negotiate with the buyer who will pay the fees (it's usually around 5 to 8% of the transaction amount). The basic Escrow.com transaction goes like this:

1. setup the transaction (you or the buyer can do this)
2. both parties agree to the transaction
3. buyer funds the transaction
4. Escrow.com confirms the funds were received and clear
5. seller (you) transfers the domain to the buyer
6. buyer confirms they received the domain
7. funds are released to you

There are several other escrow services, but for now, Escrow.com is probably still the best for now.

Congrats on your first sale!

Oh gosh what type of scam is this. I'm about to sell my first domain it's at 101 at the moment. I'm a little worried about how it all works lol.

I guess the easiest and cheapest way is to hold onto the name until you receive the money. I've done this in the past for some low(ish) value names. I set up a reseller site using the registrar api, and gave the buyer an account. This meant that I could give the buyer immediate use of the name, but still retain control. Once I had received the funds, then I could unlock the name, and let the buyer transfer it away.

Unfortunately my current hosting doesn't allow me to open the port for the api, so I can't do this any more.

Just like @catchmesleeping said, escrow is the best way to go. If they ask for some B.S appraisal or for you to do anything first, it's likely a scam. If it's a buyer it will be straight forward. YOU setup the escrow, and escrow.com will walk you through the process, they make it very simple.

And do what @briguy said. Always keep conversations saved.

Good luck and congratulations.

1. Display a “for sale” message on your domain’s home page.
2. Embrace fixed pricing if you really want to move your domains.
3. Optimize the WHOIS record for sales.
4. Don’t hide behind WHOIS privacy.
5. Have realistic price expectations.
