Turning Auto Renew Off at 1and1 Nightmare

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
I recently made the mistake of getting involved with 1&1 by transferring 23 domains to them.
Everybody knows their scam billing practices so I thought turn off auto-renew and everything would be fine.

When I requested turning off Auto Renew, they put my domains into a "Pending cancellation" status which means I still own them in WHOIS, but they've locked me out of the DNS/contact configuration.
I have been calling them everyday for the last 5 days and their reps have given me nothing but lies.

1. The first rep told me that selecting "Turn Auto Renew Off" in their contract manager would not cause me to lose access to my domains, i.e. I would be able to point them and transfer them out anytime until the expiration date. How wrong she was.

2. I woke up the next morning showing that 20 out of 23 of my domains are in a "Pending cancellation" mode without the ability to change any settings on them. I called in and they confirmed I still own my domains, and promised that it would be fixed the same day.

3. I received a confirmation email from them the next day that the domains were "reactivated" but no. They are still stuck in "Pending cancellation" status. I called in again and spoke to an outsourced rep with a thick accent, where I had to scream at her to understand basic principles like auto-renew vs. cancellation. She kept feeding me the line that it would take 24-48 hours to reactivate the domains (for which I had NEVER requested cancellation) until I threatened to speak with a supervisor.

She refused to connect me to a supervisor, put me on hold for half and hour, and told me the problem would be fixed the next morning.

4. The next morning (today), I get an email and it reads as follows:

"The domains are currently set to auto renewal off. We can reactivate the domains and you will be charged for the new renewal fee. Please let us know how you wish to proceed."

The domains don't expire until 2018 for pete's sake. Of course, I replied to them saying that I refuse any further charges to my card and tell them to fix the problem.

5. Here's the latest reply:

"Domains with 1and1 are automatically set to renew each year. Turning the renewal off is a cancellation of our process. You want the renewals off and that is what they are currently set to. When you turn the renewal off you lose the ability to make any changes or updates to the domains. You only retain the registration until the domain expires. If you need to edit the DNS settings you would need to contact us to make the changes."

They have the most backwards system I have ever seen.
STAY AWAY FROM 1&1. The low prices are NOT worth the incompetency.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I use them just to transfer-in and then transfer-out (as transit registrar) ~7 years already...
Autorenewal-slider in panel has no any impact on the domain functionality...
In your case you really cancelled them via cancel.1and1.com - that's why.
But for some TLDs (.PRO for example) - such slider is absent... so only whole cancellation is possible.
If the domain is transferred away - 1and1 cancels it automatically.
And that's all.

Oh man. If only I had asked you the details about your experience then I wouldn't be having all this trouble.
The auto renew slider was missing for .PRO, that's why the reps told me to go to cancel.1and1.com. The UI is super confusing. On one hand, it says the domains will stay active until expiration, on the other, it says cancellation.

They have no clue what they are doing and the system is really screwed up.

I agree here, very uncomfortable panel...
Because they are oriented on endusers... they don't think about us (domainers)...

So will you renew them or let them go?

Evil.co

I have a Mail.com subscription and dread the day I attempt to cancel.

There is also no bulk editing.

Luckily it doesn't mean I've lost my domains. They're still mine in the WHOIS and I can still unlock most of them and get the auth code. After the 60 day lock, I'm going to start transferring them out. I don't trust the domains, especially the higher value ones to a registrar like 1and1.

Using 1&1 is a guarantee of trouble - never worth using them even for free, it always costs in time and aggravation. Can you transfer the domains out?

Yes, they are absolutely transferrable, even more - instant transfer-out is provided also.

Not until the 60 day lock has elapsed.
For the time being I've instructed them to change the nameservers manually.
There's also one of the domains that's stuck in limbo in "pending" stage that I can't unlock, says "invalid status".

I've avoided them all these years as a domainer and I kind of wish I never got involved with them, despite the tempting prices. At least I got a cheap year of extension on the expiry of these .PROs but a huge waste of time.

Where's the next best place to transfer .PRO with a competitive rate and functioning control panel? From now on, I want to boycott everything that's owned by 1&1, including Sedo which is part of the same company. I can't believe the incompetence of these reps of a company in Europe, the so-called first world.

Have got better service from small registrars out of India even.

Don't panic and don't boycott... just use them properly... and that's all.

Regarding .PRO-transfers...
$9.99 with internetbs.net
Nice panel.

That's awesome - Internet.bs are good people. I have a couple of domains with them.
I hope they still have that price when my 60 days of h*ll at 1and1 is over.

Guess what, 1and1 also locked my account for security reasons before this whole auto-renew saga happened. They didn't contact me beforehand and just held all of my domains hostage. I had to call in to get their security team number, which is only open during business hours.

The next day, I called into the security team and surprise, surprise...the rep rudely told me that there were no notes why the account as locked but threatened according to policy, my account would be terminated if I didn't provide an ID within 3 days. Sent my ID in of course, but horrible horrible experience.

I've been calling 1&1 every day multiple times for a week now.

This price of $9.99 is standard, so will be actual at least until 2017...

p.s. $2.17 vs $9.99 is not a hell definitely.
