A domain name is registered in 1999. Then it dropped and reregistered in 2016. How old is the domain name? 0 or 17 years old ?

When a domain is won during redemption period it normally retains its original age or in this case 17 years.

In RGP the domain can be restored for special fee by current/losing registrant only.

There is a difference between a domain's AGE and its HISTORY. The domain's HISTORY includes all the times it was regged and dropped since the beginning; the domain's AGE refers only to the most recent time it was regged until now.

If the domain was regged for 20 years, then dropped, then regged again today, it would have a history going back 20 years but the age starts today.

Regarding expired domains - you can win auction only in Autorenew Grace Period...
But in Redemption (RGP) - no any auctions are possible for 3rd-parties.

you can even ADD

"Historical 25 years!"

just never use the word AGE. just use Historical.

That plus

"It was reg back in 1980 so it's been SPIDERED 30 years. Great for SEO!"
