The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Why do people think all names registered by other people are crap? Maybe the guy has a vision for the name.

Alternative answer - to get rich quick by flipping them. :)

It's the hunter instinct without all that outdoor endurance stuff. The fact that you personally can secure the name beating everyone else reaffirms just how much smarter you are than everyone else.

If those marketting the names can build a few extra hurdles to make you jump over then you can really excel at being smart and that makes it even more addictive.

Mostly the same reason businesses do, the same reason bloggers do, the same reason everyone does.
They don't understand or don't care or you're wrong..

Two secondary reason:
  1. Quite often it doesn't even matter what your domain is. Vanity isn't as important as function.
  2. Some domainers also have the annoying habit of registering everything they can on sub dollar gamble. I blame 1&1, Netfirms, Dotster... domains should be ~$15 always just to dissuade stupid.

If you're talking real real lower barrel raindeerpoop.com? That, I presume starts as a joke that goes too far.

Because they think 24 letters left of the dot and 7 letters to the right is valuable.

Most reason is lack of english language, imo

I don't think increasing the reg price will help much.. people are registering a ton of crappy .io's nowadays which cost $33 each.

And the netfirms/dotster sales started just a few months ago, people have been registering crappy domains since 1990's and still register awful domains at GoDaddy and other registrars.

The reason why people register crap domains is that they don't understand what a good domain is. imo

But .US at 10c is new .xyz at 1c is new .berlin at free is new.

I'm not sure what's going on all the time ... some people then buy those crappy io at > $33 :)

Note:
I own crappy IO ;)

Hype, misinformation, jealousy, striving to achieve the impossible and an addiction to gambling.

Domaining can be a risky business People would have thought 6 number .coms are crap some years ago but now they think they are valuable the same way the domainer is thinking about the future trends or just have something in mind for them the rest some can be a little.. well.. stupid about it

i've been known to reg. my fair share of crappy names, so let me try to explain

I am sure you own better .io's then nipples.io, implantable.io, Zipfile.io, Seosubmit.io and thousands of others.

you see that implantable.io there, that's mine and i've just reg. it yesterday :)

so obviously you think is crap, but i don't . i read about new technologies, new trends .... future, basically and i reg. names based on the info i got now (it may be wrong, but that's all i got) and if in a year it doesn't fly i drop the name. if you are not prepared to be wrong you will have no chance to be right.

implantable technology is the next step in wearables, there are million dollar grants for research, million dollar vc money in startups so i think it's a pretty good bet. is not a sure bet, but i like the odds.

Sometimes crappy looking domains are registered because they have stellar traffic metrics.

Not that many good domains left to register.

This is a good reason... here is why.
Think of it as a pyramid.
The guys at the top have all the good names. The guys like me are at the bottom, so we have to learn.
How do we learn?
We learn by making mistakes. We learn by not repeating those mistakes.

But on the other hand because we are on the lower end we have to gamble more, so the potential to make mistakes is always more than betting on a safe 5000$ dictionary word .com
So that leads us to value betting. And having to spot the value in a domain. This is where it gets a bit tricky.

Today I regged VRPlaySchool.com and somebody disagreed that it was a bad one and didn't like it, but unknown to him/her, playschool is a term thats well known outside of the US, the US would use the term preschool, but that was taken.

So I saw value in taking VRPlayschool.com because I believe the value of that word is worth more than the reg fee.
And as I said on the other thread, Its never going to be valued more than VRschool but I'm not looking for that angle. I am looking for the gamble that it's worth more than the reg fee.
And I'm playing the odds that it is.

So is that domain really bad or am I just trying to get an angle because I cant shell out $5000 for a safe
dictionary word .com.

She hit that one on the spot.

Crap domains are registered because they're owned by crap domainers made by crap decisions based on crap information.
future, basically and i reg. names based on the info i got now (it may be wrong, but that's all i got) and if in a year it doesn't fly i drop the name.
Two points to make here, while you may not agree with the first being that it's a crappy name because an implantable company will most likely be a brandable name and owning the generic is quite moot here. The second point is a counter to you holding for 1 year, that's not a gamble, or even a wise decision; most names I keep for a minimum of 3 years.
So I saw value in taking VRPlayschool.com because I believe the value of that word is worth more than the reg fee.
Please off me when the human race finds it acceptable to send children this age to "VR" preschools / playschools so they learn how to not interact with society. Terrible concept; crap domain.

Thats what I said about mobile phones and children years ago, now I know kids that are walking around with iphones yet they cant even hold it with one hand.

And I see this as a long term value bet. Its my bet to make and I put the money on the table.

Hey, not here to argue the value of the domain. I'd just like to reinforce my 2nd point of it being a bet and putting money on the table as you so put. One years registration is not a bet (or rather, investment).

Case in point, look at Mike Mann's reported sales as a reference. He states when he acquired them (years ago, not 1).

Edit: sorry, my second point was intended for another person. But, my opinion about the domain remains. Maybe only millenials will send their children to vr schools, creating a new wave of messed up generations. That's to say, they're able to reproduce without learning the most vital human interaction skills.
