If you bought a domain that's regged @ Domain.com, NetFirms, Dotster or MyDomain- Please Read This

Hi everybody. If you registered domains at Domain.com and/or one of its sister companies (NetFirms, Dotster and MyDomain) or bought a domain that was registered in one of these registrars and was pushed to you- you need to read this.

1. Pushes between accounts don't change owner details. So if you're an old owner, you'll get renewal notices and if you're a new owner you have to change the e-mail address and the rest of the details manually. You might lose your domain/domains otherwise because you won't know about renewals. I started receiving renewal notices for domains I used to own and from a quick check, I'll get a lot more notices soon. So please edit the contact details if you bought a domain that was registered in one of these registrars.

2. New accounts are automatically set up with a hosting account that's scheduled to renew. If you have a payment method in the system you'll be charged for hosting if you don't change it. Make sure you downgrade your account to a 'Parking account'. @dotbay gave these instructions a few months ago so I'm copypasting them (thanks, dotbay):
  • To deactivate your hosting account you must log in and go to Account -> Account renewal. Select โ€œDowngrade to Domain Parking Accountโ€. Then click change status. You will see a popup window with a 1800 number. close it. Then, click on downgrade account. Select a reason then click Downgrade again

I'm tagging some members that I sold domains to or that I think are using these registrars. If I tagged you by mistake, my apology. Please consider tagging other members who you know are using these registrars so everybody will know about these issues. Also, you should probably notify any people you sold domains to about these matters. Thanks.

@stellarname - Very useful information for the uninitiated. I new about this and just change the email address on domains pushed to my account until I can transfer away. But I will check that all my accounts are just parking accounts. Which I think they are.

Wow! That's a lot of sales :)

I already removed hosting.

Thanks @stub. Glad that you were already aware. I think everybody who uses them needs to know this stuff. Because really- how can a person know about a hosting account they didn't ask for just waiting for the renewal date? I had to downgrade my accounts in all of these 4 registrars. I think people who buy a domain for the first time may be the ones who get this unwanted hosting plan. Perhaps if you just open a new account using the chat's help- you're automatically enrolled into the free parking account. Not sure, but either way- everybody who deals with them needs to make sure otherwise the hosting charge might hit them.

@Adam27 Thanks. Yeah, I also had bad experiences with 1&1. They're the worst. Well, Maybe NetSol can give them a run for their money. Regarding Domain.com and their resellers- I'm not sure the forced hosting thing applies to everybody, but everybody (especially people who bought something from them and have a payment method on file) should check.

Thanks @alcy. I got 3 renewal notices yesterday for domains I sold and a quick check of other domains I sold naturally showed the same. As you know tons of people have been buying and selling domains in these 4 registrars for the past year so unless buyers will change the contact details, a lot of ex owners are going to be bombarded with renewal notices for domains they don't own- which is really bad both for the old owners and the new ones who won't know the domains need to be renewed!

@alcy By the way, I'm not sure how it works with other registrars. When I sell domains I don't check what's happening with them afterwards. But I do have accounts in all the major ones and don't recall ever getting 'renewal is due' messages after selling domains. Anyway... the volume of transactions in these registrars in the past year indicates that this will probably turn into a mass problem soon. So I hope everybody will be aware, edit the contact details if needed and check the hosting issue.

Possible scams?

No prob @Haris100. I hope nobody will have issues. I know that from now on I'll remind every buyer to make sure contact details are changed to their details regardless of the registrar involved. I'm preparing myself for an avalanche of renewal notices so hopefully this post will help me and others avoid getting them (or worst- not getting them if you're the buyer) and possibly avoiding unwanted hosting charges as well.

Possible scams?

no more scams than whats happening at domain.com
just registries not updating info for new owners
I think it happens regularly on sold domains at namecheap after push

Announcement: Because of the awkwardness of the control panel at Domain.com, Dotster.com, MyDomain.com, NetFirms.com, I will no longer be purchasing domains registered at these Registers. Any existing commitments will however be honored.

@stub The control panel is something that I personally kind of like in these registrars. With a few improvements I would like it even more (like having the ability to push domains without having to use the bulk edit tool, for example). What I don't like are the bugs and the problems that I sometimes have to deal with that for some reason don't tend to occur in other registrars as much as they do in these ones. At least for me.

I agree. love the panel for its simiplicty after some getting used to.
its got bugs.. more than godaddy etc.. but it has competition.. like namecheap for example imo

cheers

@stellarname - I cannot name one endearing feature provided by the Domain Central Control Panel. But I thank you for bringing this up, which has caused me to take a closer look at their Control Panel. It's probably not the worst CP out there, but it would be close to it. IMHO.

PS: I did have 1 account which had my account set for hosting. which I've now changed. It was a new account because I couldn't login to my old account. So I thank you again for this thread.

I much preferred the old NameCheap CP. IMHO. Even if it was a bit long in the tooth. The new control panel is nowhere near as good. Again IMHO.

HELLO : I CALLED THEM (domain.com Mrs Monet) AND she TOLD A WAY TO BULK (200 domains at a time) , CHANGE THE CONTACTS INTO YOUR CONTACTS.FROM DOMAINS THAT HAVE BEEN MOVED TO YOU, that you bought here or elsewhere.
So not changing contacts 1 by 1.=> But 200 at once.

This is very important : The buyer has to change the contacts. And I read here that this had to go 1 by 1, but there's a way.

I'm busy now, but I'll get back. Probably the 1st of september or today I can explain it to everybody.

Thanks also for this info BTW.

I'll begin a new thread about the above. (BULK changing contacts),
and add the tags you added, because they 're customers of one of these Registrars.
