Hi everyone, I figured I would make this post to help out others and to put all of our heads together to brainstorm up some sort of guide to domaining.

Please give one of your best pieces of advice in lue of helping someone who is brand new to domaining.

My tip would be: make sure you are developing at least 1/5th of your domains as you purchase more , with a goal of 4/5 domains being fully developed into some short of site that generates money.

It's best not to buy 100's of domains before attempting to develop as you will feel overwhelmed. Otherwise your yearly bill is going to be outrageous and maybe even discouraging.

Thank you and please, give back to the community and help build this thread.

This thread has a lot of good tips already, but I would say before you even think about investing in your first domain, do as much research as you can. Join forums such as this one and read the threads that are specifically for beginners. You'll be able to see how some of the more experienced domainers started their journey and you can ask them for advice.

Liked your suggestion but you have to think in this way if he managed to get toy.com or real.com in 500 $ then do you think experience of experience matters :) he will be master of his experience

First thing is research on "what really makes a good domain name". Catch up with the trend and market. And also do look for future market. And the most important part, research on how to sell your domain names to end buyers and where can you find end buyers to sell your domain names.

Buy only .com, .net and .org. Do not buy any other TLDs. They are waste of money.

The best decision I made on my path to Domaining was to attend NamesCon in Vegas. I went in hungry and ate all I could, and I learned enough to buy/invest much smarter. Plus, I met a bunch of really nice people in the domain industry. It's been an excellent investment.

The absolute best thing you can do is go to DomainSherpa.com and watch every single video before regging or buying one single domain. Learn from the pros and understand that:

1. Just because a domain "sounds" nice, doesn't mean it has value.

2. And just because a domain has "value" doesn't mean a business will want to buy it.

3. And just because a business wants to buy it doesn't mean that they'll want to pay the price you're offering the domain for.

4. And just because they're willing to pay that price doesn't mean the sale will be easy, because some sales can go bad - people change their mind, transfer issues, Escrow issues, payment issues, etc.

this is basically for the newbies, those with experience can do whatever they want, but you newbs should watch where your feet go:

as you take this journey into domain world....

keep your hands in your pockets, and guard your money closely

guard your mind even closer, as bullshit runs rampant

if you are gullible and naive', you will consume it like a sponge.

falsehoods are hard to unbelieve, proof is everything!

there is also the business of selling picks and shovels

and people showing you where to dig, dig

watch who you follow, and ask why you're following them

all news ain't news, may be just a twist of views

trying to make a point, that's point less.

don't let fame of a name, sway how you invest in names

don't pay for any tools, scripts, software or subscriptions

free works wonders ....

:)

imo....

Ask questions here. Stay away from trademarks. Clever / new hand registrations are never worth as much as you think. If your budget is 100, buy one domain. If your budget is 500 buy one domain. If you don't have a budget, make one.

Buy short, meaningful domain names. Stay away from any trademarks. Always learn and be flexible.

Sorry I tend to disagree.

.de
.co.uk
.com.au

are also great , once we know what we are doing with it...my 2 cents

Spend many hours, days, weeks, or least a few months, reading and researching before you spend a penny. This is my single tip, but it includes the information below...

Check NameBio.com to see what's selling.
Don't buy brandable until you really know that they are (better said than done).
Start trying to flip hand-registered names before you bid or backorder on better names.

Study sales, watch auctions, see what others are paying for domains try and understand the difference between a end-user sale and a reseller sale. It's very important that you learn what makes a domain valuable before you spend your Money!

Well I dont agree with you in this case as recently a 3L .BIZ was sold in $20K what do you say on this?

do you own any 3l.biz ?

buy only .com is still the best advice for a novice

Analyze each and every domain before you buy it.

- Is it taken in other extensions?
- What is the CPC?
- How much search volume?
- Has this keyword, or combination of characters, sold before?
- Is the term or keyword trending?
- Is the extension popular?
- Is this extension popular on the aftermarket?

That is exceptional, I am talking general names. Can you sell here a .biz name for $ 5? There are no takers. That is FACT.

If you calculately choose .BIZ .GUIDE and other TLDs then you can make more. Its all about how to choose your domains and whats your intention or concept behind the TLD you choose.

I agree .COM is ever best option but Good concept based or keyword rich nTLDs can do wonders :)

If I am to start domaining today, I will buy FEW meaningful .coms and possibly 2 or 3 exceptional names in other extensions. I will listen to what experienced domainers are saying.

Reason:
Few meaningful .coms keep your running cost low.
Limiting my investment in other extensions takes me away from living in fantasy land
Adhering to experienced domainers's counsel will save me from committing investment suicide
