At what point do you decide to use an escrow service? Is there a certain monetary amount? Is it when you don't quite trust the buyer? Is there some other reason?

Also, what escrow service would you recommend or stay away from?

Thanks

If the buyer is a huge corporation that you can sue, I wouldn't use an escrow service imho. The ruining of their reputation is enough to scare them..

But if you're selling to Joe Gupta from X-3rd world nation, then you'd better use a thing.

I usually suggest escrow split fees (fair) but offer the buyers other options like direct wire.
It may be more convenient for some buyers (they can use a credit card), and provides reassurance that you are legit.

Generally if I don't know the buyer and the amount is 1k or more I'd use a third party. (US fraud laws get stiff after a total of 1k). Unless you already know the buyer then there's no point really. Get a check cut and sent fed ex wait 5 days release or initiate release of domain. There are some idiots scammers out there but for the most part I still think most people are honest.

When the figure is high or the comfort of the business transaction needs more security power then paypal. lol

I use escrow.com for sales above 1k. Because the buyers also want to be safe, to know that after they pay you ,they will receive the name. The more money they are spending the more risk. That's why escrow comes in.
