Hi NPers,

I am the owner of the domain: FunFacts.net - which I wish to develop. Keep in mind, that I don't want to develop to subsequently flip. I want to actually create a productive website with quality articles, something like Diply, BoredPanda, ScoopWhoop etc. Anyways, what I want to know is, is it more effective to develop on FunFacts.net or to search for a brandable? My boyfriend told me that a brandable domain is better for long term and that FunFacts.net isn't that appealing. He says it's nicer to have a brand name, so I could make t-shirts, pens etc. I'm still stuck on FunFacts.net.

Which one do you guys prefer? FunFacts or the Brandable?

Thanks! :)

I agree with your boyfriend. And btw, make sure you use a dot com extension. A brandable could include a fanciful/madeup name.

FunFacts .com will be better.

Yeah, he raises some good points, but I don't have THE right brandable domain yet in my mind and I don't want to just settle. I kinda wanna begin working on this project now, so that's why I'm willing to go with FunFacts.net since I already have it.

So - are you saying that FunFacts.net is fine, but FunFacts.com would be better?
Absolutely correct.
If .COM is "not affordable/not available" than I suggest go for brandable .COM and forward .Net to main site.

I also like better a brandable name for a rather general site. Among advantages, it let's you change the scope of your site without problem. IMHO, keywords names are more suitable for a narrow niche.

Have you thought of using name generators (usually, they add suffixes or prefixes to a keyword, but some are more sophisticated) ? I'd be surprized you cannot find a suitable name within hours or days.

FunFacts .net is a great domain

if you like it
I see no reason why you shouldn't stick with it

I think Funfacts.net is perfect....

You should go ahead and start developing it... once the site is up and running and earning there is no reason why cant develop another site at a later stage when you find a more brand-able domain name that you can stick on T-shirts.

In the mean time you can build up funfacts.net and get it earning

Funfacts.net is your first choice, stick to it. There are many established .net websites out there with the .com a flop! Your bf was right in suggesting a brandable name, but Funfacts.net is both brandable as well as well a keyword doamin. At the end of the day, it's not the domain which matters, its the content which will help you to score high in search engine. If you have quality contents, you will definitely score high. Gone are the days of .com ruling the search engines (it may be true in case of flipping still now, but not in case of getting a site established).

Thanks guys! :)

I guess I'll go with FunFacts.net for now and eventually - establish my brand. I don't like the brandables I've seen as of late, so when I find the right one, I'll go for it. I know FunFacts.net could be branded, but it just doesn't sound original or interesting to me. Nonetheless, it's still a good name to me.

If anyone else has anymore opinions, you're free to mention.

Do yourself a favor - keep to .com
Better still, com+net
'Cos even after development you may find the need to sell the website with the domain name. All things being equal, with .com you'll be 9 times richer as compared to .net
With com+net you have the 4 aces.

Suggestion:
If funfacts.com is not yet developed, then you can make offer to the owner to purchase the name.

anyone suggesting to keep the dot net has never sold a website before.

I've never sold a *website* before but I do know about some successful dot net websites though, that are also ranking higher than their dot com competitors.

FunFacts is indeed a brandable too, because it makes for a strong brand name that does what it says on the tin.

You are communicating to your audience exactly what you do, your personality and your vision. It says fun, humor, fact finding, basically you can find what you need an answer to here, in a way that will make you want to engage again and again.

FunFacts...... love it.

Yes, FunFactual doesn't sound bad. I like Fact Bucket too but I think FunFacts.net is best . FunFacts.net is actually aged too, so wouldn't that be advantageous to the SEO process?

Yes it helps. I suggest to At Least make a Facebook page for your site so others can share your content.
