This will be a great info thread that I will keep running as long as comments keep pouring in.

Please list:

1) They type of domain names (ex. GEO, keyword, traffic, website, aged, etc...

2) TLD (.com, .net, .org, co, etc...)

3) Frequency of sales (How many sold out of every 10 purchases) (How fast from date of purchase).

4) Average price per sale and average purchase price.

5) How you find buyers (Auctions, Emails, Forums, etc...)

6) Anything else you feel is important to add to this topic.

Remember, just discuss your best selling domain category as discussed in number 1. No need to list actual domains, unless you really want to.

I think this is very important information to show everyone the possibilities within the Domaining Industry. Can be used as a CASE STUDY.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
In my experience:
  1. Generic one-word domains that are easy to pronounce and spell.
  2. All of the TLDs that start-ups love to use: .com, .org, .io, .me, .co, .tv, etc. The new gTLDs are picking up among startups as well.
  3. It takes about 2-5 years on average for a decent domain name to sell at a reasonable price. Buy enough of them and you'll have multiple sales every single day.
  4. It depends:
    • For non-.com domains: Average sale price is low five figures. Average purchase price is low three-figures. These are riskier assets, but the ROI is higher when you do sell them.
    • For .com domains: Average sale price is mid five figures with occasional home-runs in the six figures or higher. Average purchase price is low five figures. These are more established assets, so the ROI is lower if you need turnover and cannot afford to be patient.
  5. Every way possible. I gave my breakdown in another post.
  6. Diversification is still important. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, regardless of what works best. Nothing is guaranteed to perform well forever.
