Its enough that we were treated like thieves with their attitude !
They can do their special EAP pricing so domainers cant get in early.
They can set very high prices on renewals..but we can stand TOGETHER and say ENOUGH!

Its time to BOYCOTT THEM (!!)

Time to BOYCOTT new gTLD's !!

Part of the plan would have been for us to create their secondary market by us buying their not top Premium names and then reselling it in the secondary market. We would be the agents to create awareness too. Enough of that!

WE are being USED by THEM !

Facts:
1. As of now after launch Many Premium names have still not been sold.
Including .mom, .poker, .casino,.cars/car/auto etc…

2. There is lots of Choice.

3. The different industries which those extensions target are not running after them!

4. The market is basically dead at this stage.
Very few real End user are buying those premium names at any high price.
We all know the marketing fluff and buzz and “constructive” deals etc…
We had spoken to major players in those industries, and they prefer their .com.
The smaller players in the forums within those fields also dont want to move away, and definitely not spend the money the Registries want.

The price is way to high and doesnt make sense.

Some of the new extensions have been bought out as their model hasnt worked!

5. Beyond that, as a domainer I would like to buy some Premium names from other owners or just buy from the Registries directly.
However they are charging for renewal and transfers a very high price.
This is done across the board for all Premium names within most Registries.

There should be a CAP and as of now its seems like a Cartel!

We have seen strange things – the Registry price is secret but each Registrar contacts the Registry to figure out the price, and then up it by whatever they want!

6. If they want people to continue buying some of their names for a high fee, they need to allow for a Secondary/after market to exist (!!), as that would give more value and more awareness, which would enable them to to sell for a one time high price. They need to allow there to become a secondary market.

7. Otherwise there is to much choice out-there and you will end up like .tv did for a long time.

8. You need a healthy aftermarket for your names.

However no domainer and most End users dont want to be stuck with high renewals or transfers.
They dont care about your ROI plans.

They compare you to .com and for a good name would be willing to pay a bit more for a renewal or a transfer. As in $100 but not $1000.

As is they will be dishing a one time high fee for the Premium domain. They cant get the budget for renewals too. You dont realize how it works.
Wake up Dontus,Uniregistry !!. They can excuse a one time high expense but to get approval from their finance Dept. for a constant high renewal wont work!

9. As of now End users arent buying into this and domainers wont if they cant sell them due to high renewal/transfer prices.

10. Bottom line- there wont really be an after/secondary market which is what they need unless they drop renewal/transfer rates. Droping those prices on registrations would be great, but they still need to make an impressive ROI.. so they might as well keep those..:)

However make sure that all past registrations of Premium domains and future ones wont require a high renewal/transfer price.

Rightside, Uniregistry, Donuts – you need to rethink this ASAP!

Time for holding ourselves back and not buying any new gTLD's until there is a firm commitment and change.
Rightside is already working on that but its not enough! Donuts and Uniregistry need to join in !

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
@Yong1 That's a great idea, maybe you can get a following with BrandNow being your first member once he dumps his gTLDs. LOL

Yes please start a boycott where no one buys new extensions and when you gain a big following I'll jump in and grab some great domains.

You'll accomplish your goal, make mine easier.. :)

Maybe we should boycott them by refusing to visit sites on new gTLDs. Oh, wait...

Your title is a bit confusing and contradictory to your overall concerned. Your concerned was not about the newTLD itself? Your main concerned was about the pricing and the way registrars and registries operates their business?

I have bought about 700 new gTLDs, dropped about 300 of these (the worst ones and most with "premium renewals") and sold about 65 names (almost 10%).

I am happy the way my portfolio is improving and I will continue to buy both more new gTLDs and more .COM. And yeah, a few .ORG and .NET names as well.

Sorry, no boycott from me...

You are entitled for your own view. Nonetheless, Donuts Registry was created by Domainers....

No one said that the internet needs domainers...
And ahem... Dontus and UNiregistry were founded by Domainers... So it would make sense for them to be a little more attuned to where they came from.

Yes..its capitalism..but so can we utilize as a group to affect the outcome to.. Its called democracy! :)

And as a fact Rightside already changed their future pricing model!

Bottom line- they know that it doesnt make sense having high renewals as it affects their long term sales.
I just think that Uniregsitry and Donuts need a little help to get there... :)

Btw- No one needs new gTLD's either. according to your logic...

True ..but its about marketing, no? :)

I do want the Registries to change, and believe they have a good heart. So I wanted to be a bit gentle about it.. at least in the headline...
On the other hand I think that the Registries needs to change some things ASAP.

By the way, others wrote about this too..

I can agree on this, even from an "egoistic perspective". Crazy high prices are bad for everyone:

1. They are obviously bad for the domainer.

2. They are bad for businesses who wants them. At least the smaller and middle-sized ones.

3. They might even be bad for the registries, at least the crazy expensive domains. Most of these will probably remain available, while most of the rest will drop. Not many sane people are willing to pay 60 grand annually (or so), for a name.

New gTLDs are being launched to increase the namespace available to endusers.

You can compare the high pricing of renewals with the real estate industry which also charges high rent for the most desired locations to do business.

Small business does not belong on the 'High Street'.

I think we should collectively file a lawsuit against ICANN for their mismanagement.. that would make more sense.

let's face it. with 1000+ extensions and ever changing premium prices and renewal rates the domain space has become a mess.

In fact the internet does not need 'domainers' to survive, it never did !

Well Yes/No. You need someone to broker high-value names and the registries are not capable of doing this well enough in a global marketplace.

@Yong1 how are you going to convince the Chinese domainers to join your boycott, they own most of the new gTLD domains and are know for buyouts ?

We might not need to boycott most of them, as no business really needs them so most will disappear themselves :)

But you are right, they have messed up the marketplace only fooling people to invest in crap. THere are some exceptions, but not many.

That sounds more like an active choice, than a boycott to me.

But I agree, I kind of like these extensions as well.

I don't think most domainers take ngtlds seriously enough to call this a problem that needs revolution to solve.

The way the whole process that Registrars need to check on renewal prices with the registry is not cool. the registries price is not out -there. Why not have it out there and foster competition between registrars??

We as domainers are the #1 marketers..as people ask us what we do..and it has more of an affect than their ads or marketing initiatives. its called word to more and personalized marketing.nothing beats that.

I believe we have more power as a crowd than we think.

Beyond that Rigthside already stopped high renewal prices but not retro and the others have not yet joined in.

Come join us too!
There is a whole group getting ready to boycott them !

I like the idea of new gTLDs, but they are not domainer friendly. For some reason, most gTLDs have renewal fees that are much higher than .COMs. I buy domains expecting to hold them for many years, so their ridiculous renewal fees keep steering me back towards investing in .com and .org.

ICANN needs to set new rules for the next batch

1) No premium pricing

2) Renewal rates guaranteed to remain the same (and not increase)

3) All names are released and available to the general public at the same time

and ICANN needs to stop releasing extremely similar names.. .work, .works, pics, .photos, .pic, .horse, .horses, .game, .games, etc.

Domain Names were never meant for BUYING and SELLING (one may say, so are BISCUITS,they are for eating not buying and selling, but the case is different here) . If you think you should make money by selling domains to end users for BIG MONEY, they too have right to sell domains to end users for premium prices (less than BIG MONEY).
However, the change of price by some of them is not ethical I guess. We can bycott such nGTDs with unfair pricing policies.
