Hey Folks

I just checked on NameStat that .top sales spiked over the past 24 hours. More than 18 000 registered.

Does anyone know what caused this spike?

Main country was China with 16 500 registrations

...

The reason is that there is no term which can top the term 'top'.
The secret is no secret - it's a psychologic effect and this effect will hold on.
More .top waves will come, from all over the world - it's a .top tsunami in the meanwhile.

Most probably primarily chips and pinyins but also common terms (1,2,3,4 word/s) and IDNs (primarily chinese language terms).
And german names, for example teuer.top - means 'expensive'.

A few late arrivals finally caught wind that /top's have been on sale for 40 cents for the past 6 months..or perhaps some new craze has taken over..or a combination of both

Shouldn't the thread title say registered as opposed to sold, there is quite a difference?

Simply because it is the lowest priced extension to register and has been for the best part of a year. In order for it to continue it will need to keep prices low once those very low reg prices are gone the numbers of it registered will fall. If they have to keep prices low it works for them to make money, however if it is a bargain basement domain extension you cannot seriously think you will make a living reselling that extension.

Spammers must be loving it :)

Of course, even more of that (unfortunately), everytime when I want to watch football streams on some 'grey zoning sites' I have to handle with those fishy bait attempts as first which are abusing and ruining the reputation of the .top extension ..
