There's plenty left, but they are all premiums, and so worth about 1K each.

What do you all think the chances are that this VIP extension picks up steam?

Hi

because they are priced at $1k, does not make them premium.

they are just listed at premium pricing

imo...

I think it would be a better investment to stick to the single word .vip domain names that are relevant to the actual TLD. Like for example, club.vip or even something like one that I own already, strictly.vip

Having had 160k registrations within the first 24 hours imo it is safe to say .vip is here to stay.

For $1k you can get a decent dot com or at the very least some name that there is a market for. There is no market for .vip now or maybe ever...imo

60% of VIP registrations are in China. Looks like another mass run after the numbers. Some people will never learn.

Thank you, all! I seriously came this close... Had my CC info plugged in and everything. But, thankfully, I gave it enough time for rationality to set in. And you all have helped me so as not to let that pesky excitement take its sporadic, involuntary (potentially-in-the-end-screwing-me-over) toll...

It's best to think sometimes... ;)

People also said don't invest in .net, do what your gut tells you, right now a good one to grab is .one but not for short term, if you find decent .com's get those first. I wouldn't put 1k into just one domain name check droplists and after market auctions you can get some nice ones if you are willing to spend the time. :)

This isn't 1995 to ponder about investing in .net or not. New gTLDs are a dime a dozen, and common sense dictates to proceed with caution every time a new "generic" TLD is launched.

Anything non-specific, such as .VIP, .xyz, .gdn, .wang etc, that attempts to flush the entire namespace without specialization, depends on landrush adoption. I can only think of StripClub.VIP as a good one LOL

Just ask yourself a question:

Do I have better chance of profiting from purchase of 2-3 good quality LLLL.coms or 1 LLL.vip?

And another question:

Is a .vip name worth 1/20-1/40 of the same name in .com? Meaning, would a name sold for $1M in .com sell for $25K-$50K in .vip?

It's safe to say that speculation is here to stay.
Fixed :lookaround:

Exactly, this is a no-brainer really.

The same people who have bought .cm .ws .top .ren etc
Good luck with that. Don't follow the fool.

One word .cc .io .co .xyz .club .info etc sold for $$$$ so why not .vip

Domaining is just like gambling IMO, who really knows the outcome and despite the extension.

No. Some exceptional one-worders (@deez007 's strictly.vip is quite nice IMO) might hold some value but random LLLs are worthless...

I totally agree mate, the same applies to many of the other new TLD's... the domain name has to make sense and be related to the actual TLD. (same applies to .online/.club etc...)

This is exactly why domainers are failing, they are not investing but gambling, and buying domains like they would lottery tickets. It just doesn't work like that, you have to pick the right domains to make sales.
Don't worry, if it ever takes off it's never too late to jump in. Rather be a fast second than a prime mover. I predict that this is another TLD à la .top/.xyz and most regs will originate from China. If you are going to buy a few, pay no more than regfee. Buying names at 1K a pop is ridiculous. If you have money to burn - donate to charities, not registries.

The best post this year...
And I agree on 101%.

This is where we disagree.as all speculative investments is gambling, whether it's new gTLDs, .com, stock market, or even starting your own business.

I'd much rather be on the forefront just in case.

Even gamblers need to know how the odds are stacked. In roulette, blackjack, poker - every game that can be beaten - you need to know what you're up against. Stocks can be invested into by studying the company's financials and market trends.

With domains, it's an entirely different game.

I always believe if you have to ask a bunch of strangers where you do not know their experience, biases and affiliations it is best not to invest in that area.

This is what I mean, many domainers don't see the difference between pure speculation (for instance betting on any random extension for no good reason) and making a calculated risk (educated speculation).
Speculation is not the same as gambling.
.vip is completely unproven at this point, not backed by anything. It is gambling.
I'm not sure if we disagree on the concepts or the vocabulary.
