report Attempted domain theft ?

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
on saturday night ( prime time for domain theft ) i got an email all in russian that read ( after translation )

-----
GoDaddy received a request from Dmitry Volkov by [email protected] of 14 May 2016 on the transfer of registration records under our control.

You received this message because you are the owner of a registered trade mark or the administrative contact for the domain name. If you are not the owner of the domain, or transfer to a new owner, please forward this communication to the owner of the account, to complete the transfer process.

-----

( there is more on this email like the security key - the domain name and what to do the transfer the domain to godaddy.com )

i never ever use godaddy.com for anything ( in the past 15 years ) as they did me wrong a very long time ago .

i emailed the person to stop trying to steal my domain and i get a very nasty email back the he bought i at godaddy as it was listed for sale there . ( i never ever list anything at godaddy.com EVER )

he also said that he supposibly already paid for the domain at godaddy.com .

question : if his story where true , should i have not gotten any email from godaddy that the domain is sold and that the buyer paid for it ?

remember i did not list any domain at godaddy.com and i did not get any email from godaddy other than the transfer request - which also does not say anything about the domain being sold or been paid for .

there is not whois protect on that domain and the domain name was listed during that time on this forum ...

what do you think ?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Did you contact Godaddy about this? The first thing i would do.

But yes Godaddy are strange, they send me email every week urging to renew one domain that was transferred away from them a year ago...

not sure why i would contact godaddy - i have nothing to do with godaddy - i have no domains there at auction or for sale or even registered - absolutely nothing - a few weeks ago i got emails from them to verify an auction listing of a different domain ( and some days later that the listing was declined because they where unable to verify ownership .)

there are just alot of thiefs and scammers out there !

Had the same type of email this morning.
I wouldn't press a button,
Report to godaddy and delete the email.

Looks like a very cheap scam. Just ignore this.

I received the exact same emails in Russian as well over the past 2 days after received email notification from GoDaddy that I have a sale of my domain names in GoDaddy Auctions with the status Funds received, authorisation pending.

I called GoDaddy support and the officer Ambiga told me it's ok to provide authorization codes, as the domain will be transferred to GoDaddy registrar, and thus GoDaddy will have the transfer records.

I asked further for assurance. She gave me 'Auctions FAQ' link: Auctions FAQ and advised to email the Auctions department instead as phone support has limited access to my account.

In the Auctions FAQ, it was mentioned that Buyer must initiate the domain name transfer.

I've pm @Joe Styler earlier and waiting for him to look into this to advise further.

I have sold a domain /Namesilo registered/ in GoDaddy Auctions 2 days ago and it is with the status Funds received, authorisation pending.
Today I received email in Russian from [email protected].
The links inside lead to my account page and GD help page.
As I was not sure how this work, I tried to transfer domain out using codes provided in the email, despite it is not in my GD account, it is Namesilo.
It gave me 'wrong code' error.
As instructions in the email were not clear I assumed I furst have to transfer it to GD, then transfer out.
I have domain unlocked, no privacy and noti n 60 days lock period but still cannot transfer it to GD - 'Unavailable For Transfer' error.

I am not saying it's not possible to sell a domain at godaddy , however it is highly unlikely to have sold it there if you do not list them for auction .

Also on think is for sure , it has to show in your godaddy account if you sold a domain someplace !

If you did not list it for auction I would not think it could sell like this. We have another team who contacts people directly if their names are not listed but someone is interested and they do not use these emails.

This is a scam do not reply to them. We would not send this type of email. Also any sales for your domains can be seen by logging into your GoDaddy account or going to auctions.godaddy.com and checking under your "sold" section it will list all the information you need and have a link to contact the buyer. Do not respond to emails like the one you say you have received.

I have this email in Russian too. The difference is I have sold my domain on GD auction and I am waiting for transfer instructions.
Email has GD copyright text, headers are like other GD emails I have received:

Links inside are not hidden behind fake anchor and are leading to GD.
I am wondering where is the catch? Maybe contacting email of the 'buyer'? I did not contacted her.
I sent back this strange email to GD asking for help and received normal 'thank you' email in English from them, but still have no further reply what to do.
Do I have to ignore this Russian email too?

Yes you should contact people inside your account using the sold section of your auctions.godaddy.com account. It is very possible that you sold the domain name and the buyer is overanxious but you should always wait for the word from GoDaddy before moving any domains. Also it is best to use the links inside the sold section to contact the buyer after we clear the funds. You don't want a domain to sell, we don't ok the funds because they are bad and you move the domain before we give you the ok to move it. We only do that after we are sure the money is real.

Reaching out to Godaddy is a no brainer, since the fraudster claims to have bought the name there. You can simply forward the email to [email protected].

*deleted the rest since Joe has already replied.

I am also currently in contact with Dmitry regarding a purchase through Godaddy auctions. Funds have been received 3 days ago and I am waiting for them to clear in order to start the transfer.

I see no indication of a scam. He is using an escrow service to complete the purchase (Godaddy Escrow), he negotiated like a real buyer would, and we agreed upon a very competitive purchase price on the domain we are transacting.

IF he was a scammer, why would he contact people directly from his Whois email?
IF he was a scammer why would he use an Escrow service to purchase names?
IF he was a scammer why would he negotiate competitive price points on names he wants?

I personally do not think he is a scammer and in a few days I will have finite confirmation once the funds clear.

No he is not a scammer. I recently sold him a domain via Afternic and escrow
In fact we are looking at selling him some more domains

For Dmitry Volkov by [email protected], He has just bought my domain epl.biz from my listing at Godaddy.

Godaddy has confirmed that he has paid to my domain and I have transferred this domain to him this morning.

I don't think he is a thief or scam here. I think the problem above happened, perhaps he bought transfer domains service from Godaddy and he typed a wrong name of the domain (mistake on spelling...)

For security, I always contact the buyer from my Godaddy Account for the information of domains transfer

And this afternoon, I have just sold some good domains to him as well from my Godaddy account. I make sure he is a real person with real deals.

Don't be scared, Dmitry Volkov is a genuine buyer simply he submitted a direct transfer request not knowing the Afternic staff will have assisted him in a second time with the whole process :)
We've just sold 3 domains to him and they've been regularly paid.
.
Yes, you've sold some names through Afternic.com if you got a transfer request from him ... Afternic is slow in confirming a sale (usually this happens after few days) but you can just get in toich with your Afternic agent to verify the genuinity of the deal..

hello all, im also in the midst of one of these. I guess we have ot imagine the first time we walked into a Costco and bought everything in site.

i agree with latest posters, the transfer message comes, but dont forward til transfer and payment are approved.

buyer isnt told about 5 day hold so they think, hey the transfer is being held up, the godaddy transfer system says the transfer is waiting for action.

Prior method held up sending out codes (at least for me) but then wouldnt send them out when 5 day period elapsed.

I still think the autotransfer adds to trouble becuase its adds a transaction that coudl have trouble (a transfer) to what we really want, the sale.

And then the response form godady was without the transfer and some payment, the above $5k sales would go to auction falsely.

Go back to the issue at hand. Until a payment fails seems like this is a real buyer??

TO the first guy who posted, did you get the transfer message on a name you had listed at auction, or a random name, theta would be different.

Everyone else check your auctions listings. probably you never know what your autorenwing your listing of for years and years

i also think its possible that the transfer message , in russian, comes when he buys the name and checks out, Then there may be some safety checks and you dont get the "Your domain sold" message til the next day.

Like others above, for me the transaction is pending authorization, i can contact the buyer through the system once funds are approved and send codes securely as joe suggested above.
