I don't think.
They simply put a dot instead of blank space in the message.

seriously i never think about creating 404 pages on my site because i think its time waste. why do you waste so much time on 404 pages ? why not on creating something ?

A 404 page can be used to retain traffic or direct people to where you think they may have intended to go too. Others use it as a search page. For example if you tried to go too site.com/information.php instead of getting the default 404 page you may get a page with search results for your site for the term 'information'

If someone sees the standard 404 error they are more likely just go elsewhere.

For a good user experience. What else do you do? Just let them go to the homepage, blank page, or some other random page in confusion as it's not the resource they requested/expected? Gotta keep users informed and requests going to valid and correct resources so your site is well configured etc. A frustrated user is usually shortly no longer a user.
