Have you actually sold a domain?

Just started doing this so not yet.

Currently 2-3 weeks into my domaining career, yet to make a sale! Not that I have been trying. I have however, learnt a whole lot on this forum and hopefully I can post some more positive results regarding sales in the near future.

no .. none .. nada

I will admit that in recent years sales $500+ seem to be on the decline.

My view on this is that a lot of sales occur between domainers and the launch of hundreds of new TLDs has drained the resources of investors who might otherwise have purchased aftermarket domains in already existing extensions.

Also a relative newbie. Have sold on x-platforms. never received the money. However, excuses that would not hold up in any court.

which platforms?

auctions sites don't work on excuses or much communication for that matter. there is a sale, then payment, then end of story.

and if no payment then a ban. you're really not supposed to be doing much talking there.

well in this case if you say you are new to domaining then maybe I can offer adcvice.... for you to keep away from platforms which do not pay you for sales or those which for whatver reasons you fear you cannot name. and sitck to those platforms that in most cases do pay you and which in all cases you can name.

the biggest sale I had was in 2012 for $3250 after that it declined and once I started selling to resellers I at least recouped $ back but for you newbies unless you have the dot com and actively persue end buyers you will most likely make next to nothing if anything.

reading about all the great sales on here gets you pumped but the reality is its a game for dot com holders who have been at this a long time and have inventory they held for years.

I only buy a few in each tld when on sale cheap to hand reg in upcoming niches since new asian buyers are getting into it to and then I can afford to play in upcomer gtld a bit hoping something will attract a buyer but I don't rack up cc bill on domains .

don't get caught up buying hundreds of domains hoping abuyer will come along cause they wont!

I have some on make offer and for appraisal. I still need to go through the fine print here. (about advertising for other threads etc). Would appreciate views/opinions private or public.

Of course, if you can get sites developed cheaply, either by doing it yourself or hiring writers, its a great time to buy good developer domains cheap

I think it's a good idea to set yourself a limit, like
1. I won't hold more than 100 domains until I sell one
2. I won't spend more than $1000 until I see a domain.

My biggest sale was $7000 and that was for a domain hack! That was back in the day when people weren't into domain hacks that much on the forum. Some didn't understand what I was talking about.
I've sold a couple domain hacks actually. I still have some really good ones.

This business has been hurt after the recession took hold. Before that it was pretty good.
I haven't been a seller in the last couple years. I've actually pulled all my domains off the market completely.

I'm a long term investor and I'm way more selective in what I buy. Don't buy junk domains and this will pay off in the long run. It's not cheap to keep renewing either, so sell if you have to, but if you get a good domain, hold onto it.

I have some LLLL.com that I'm keeping and hope to be able to pass along to my kid. That's the kind of long term I'm talking about.

I could put my entire portfolio back on the market and sell most of it pretty quick for about what I've spent over the years, but I'm seeing the market taking off now in the stuff I own, so I'm holding out.

This is not an easy business to make money in. Don't get fooled by all the sales stats and hype going around.
This is the best place to learn from others, but there are a lot of new players in the market. Not just domainers, but companies that want you to buy domains and services from them. You are their bread and butter if you are new.

Read as much as you can on here and ask questions. Do your Due Diligence before you buy, that will help you make sales and not lose money.

This forum is great for the support. However, most of the buyers here are domain investors (domainers) who want to buy low even for a very good name. Sellers who are desperate and want money bad or want to liquidate their domains at the fractions of the price, or flip domains, they could find someone here. However, I've rarely seen an end-user to be the part of NP forum. There must be more marketing needed to attract end-user here.
I personally own thousands of dotcom domains and would prefer end-users rather than juggling with fellow-domainers. I'm of a firm belief that if you own a solid domain, an opportunity would knock your door eventually.
ONE MORE THING THAT MAKES ME WONDER WHY DOMAINERS USE WHOIS-PRIVACY? ARE THEY AFRAID OR WHAT? MY SINCERE ADVICE TO ALL MY FELLOW DOMAINERS IS "NEVER USE WHOIS-PRIVACY UNLESS NEEDED OTHERWISE!"
MAKE YOUR WHOIS INFO VISIBLE. MENTION ON WHOIS INFO: "THIS DOMAIN IS FOR SALE!" MAJORITY OF POTENTIAL AND SERIOUS BUYERS USE "WHOIS LOOKUP" TO APPROACH SELLERS...

I sold almost $50,000 worth of domain last year and am on track to double and hopefully triple that figure in 2016

If your just starting out I would suggest saving money hand registering available domains and save up to buy domains that are in demand. Take a look at the reported sales thread and the top domain for sale in the marketplace thread. Tune yourself into what sells quick and what you may or may not be able to sell.

2003-2008 was more active on promotion even though always been a passive end user only seller, 2008-2016 call me super passive as have a ton of websites now started in the 2003-2016 range bringing in income so don't need the dough and super busy, 11:15 at night and I'm just now ordering custom pens, tshirts and vehicle graphics for my latest website so I average 4 to 6 hours of sleep a night, have minimum offers set where I don't even see offers in lowball range anymore as don't have the time, my plan has worked well as basically reinvested the majority of the profits into websites as the goal was always grow into something massive and realize the profits 20+ years out, so have I sold a ton of domains in the last 14 years=no but 99% were reg fee expired .coms into 1-10k so doesn't take many yearly sales at that profit margin to turn a decent profit and continually reinvest, so domain sales profits have funded my domain development.

I am a passive seller and hold about 300-350 domains currently (trying to target 250 and trim for quality). My long term goal is to develop my domains, so I buy with that criteria in mind. My average price I pay for a domain is mid XX

In the meantime, I list most domains at Flippa, Godaddy. And Sedo with buy now prices and sell 1-2 percent per year there or through email for a net profit each year after all renewals and expenses.

Namepros is a buyers market. Once in a while I will list domains that I don't plan to renew here or on eBay. Most times I just let them drop because it isn't worth the effort to squeeze out a few more dollars.

For me domaining is a nice hobby that I can put as much or as little effort into as I have time for. And my hobby supports itself and actually nets me a small profit.

The biggest mistake the new domainer makes is too many hand regs and trying to survive on low revenue flips on forums. Renewals kill most newbies 1 year in.

Yes, renewing hundreds of mediocre-quality domains will get you in trouble. I have been guilty as well. Those renewals add up over time and in the end get dropped. A common reply I get when doing outbound marketing is "we already have a domain." .COM registration growth had stagnated prior to the new TLDs and the Chinese numeric domain mania. So this idea that there are all these end user startups looking for a domain and who cannot afford a .COM is probably just hype from the registries.

I started my first auction on Flippa 3 days ago... 27 days to go, no bids yet.
I still think I might make a profit on that one but I'm not sure.

I claimed my second domain less than an hour ago. I have really good hope for that one. I think it will bring in a lot of money.

So no, I haven't sold yet. But that's only because I just started.
