information Domain Drop Catching For China: An Online Multiplayer Game That Anyone Can Play

Spaceship Spaceship
Gamifying domaining is a great way to have fun while investing in this industry. Over the years, I have begun to treat domain drop catching almost like a game. Drop catching is a cheap form of entertainment that may net me a big sum one day. Lately, my drop catching focus is four-character (4C) .com domain names for China.

Every day, expired dot com domains are released starting at 2 PM EST/EDT. I generally spend about an hour looking at the dropping domain names. I use ExpiredDomains.net as a source of dropped names. The website is free to use and excellent. Every 5 or 10 minutes, I download a list of expired 4C .com domain names, quickly scan the list, and select a few names for further investigation.

On January 1st, the first name I investigated was JP46.com. I like domain names that start with two letters because many Chinese words are two characters. I'm not concerned with the number "4" as long as the whole domain name has a good meaning(s).

I have previously written about my Chinese database that I use to evaluate the meanings of domain names for China. The database is a list of numbers and letters with the corresponding Chinese characters that rhyme with them. When I read news reports of domain name sales with detailed descriptions, I copy each name and its associated Chinese character as reported in the news to my list, which serves as my database for future domain evaluations.

I quickly checked JP46.com against my Chinese database. The results were great for my purposes. In Chinese, JP means 金η₯¨ (golden ticket), 精品 (gifts), ι‡‘η‰Œ (gold medal), and Japan. I then looked at JP46.cn to discover that no website was built on it. When I searched Google, I discovered a Chinese site JP46.cc that sells knives. Then I used Archive.org to look at the history of JP46.com and found nothing. Finally, I tried to pronounce the translated domain names in Chinese (金η₯¨46, 精品46, and ι‡‘η‰Œ46), and they all sounded good.

I decided to register JP46.com manually using GoDaddy. Unfortunately, someone in Bulgaria got it first - congratulations! Not upset by this failed exercise, I continued looking for other 4C .com domains, eventually found one that I liked, and registered it.

I spent an hour and registered just one domain name. Was it worth it? I think so.

To me, hunting for quality domains is the best online multiplayer game. In addition to the potential payout, I feel adrenaline running through my body as I try to beat players all over the world just to grab that one valuable domain name.

However, I believe the game will soon come to an end, as demand for short domain names continues to increase. As 4C .com domains become more scarce, I’ll have to turn to new types of domains for drop catching, or I'll have to look for other forms of entertainment.

when you see the end of your drop catching success in one pattern
and you are beaten by others all the time..

you may be on the right track...

Drop catching has kinda always been this way. It goes in spurts just like the market. The most successful don't drop catch what is in huge demand at that given moment, it's more about predicting what the next big trend will be, and jumping in on it early so you can bank on it later ;)

Speaking of, does anyone have any strategies they use to predict trends? I actually really like technology and try and read industry blogs to see if something is mentioned that may be a niche to invest in. Sure wish I had been buying domain names when LED was just getting hot!

Very true. I try to stay ahead of the curve.

I use a technique I learned in property investment: the ripple effect. If properties in the center of town are rising, then you can go a little bit further out to find properties that have not changed in prices yet, buy them, and the wait for the wave to come. For example, when I read the news that all 3C and 4L .com were registered, I thought 4C and 5L would be next, so I started drop catching these two categories. Because of little competition, I was able to catch many .com names that I liked -- even manually using the slow Godaddy registration process. Now it's getting more and more difficult, but it also gives me the hope that what I acquired earlier will be of value.

Yeah, that's great advice. That's how I bought my apartment in NYC. I bought in a section of Queens that was still affordable because Brooklyn was already too expensive. Within a year my neighborhood, and my apartment's value, took off. Makes sense this would apply to digital real estate as well.

So you have real experience! Many things that I've learned in property investment can be applied to domain name investment.

Been catching .cn for around 2 years but very difficult now, a lot of competition.

Like Kasey, I spent a lot of time scanning drop lists, compiling lists of possibles, eventually backordering the occasional name, lost more than I won but now starting to see the first few sales and increasing interest, hence the difficulty in "catching" nowadays.

Dropcatching is the most funny and expensive of my games :)

Suspens at drop time... Followed by happiness or sadness... And same player play again the next day!
Better than poker lol

Haha, never expected I would buy a domain someone else actually wanted :P. I ended up getting jp46.com on flippa, i felt like i had over paid cuz of the 4 but i said hey at the very least jp is japan not even knowing any of the translations obviously. And also as always, I appreciate your attention to detail not many people would be able to tell us if words sound good with numbers. I also have bktcn which you told me could mean newstand china. Now the next hurdle is finding buyers who care about the chinese meanings and not the ones who are always emailing me offering 1000 rmb for a chip.nets.

Why would people buy an ebook when they can get the same stuff for free from blog?

I spent a lot of time scanning drop lists, compiling lists of possibles, eventually backordering the occasional name, lost more than I won but now starting to see the first few sales and increasing interest, hence the difficulty in "catching" nowadays.
I figure that patience is an asset few people own these days. Now may be the time to relax and wait for the wave to come.

I also do same for finding great 2- word keyword domains and other quality domains.
With too many extensions launched, I think 2-word is probably the longest to go. I think 3-word .com and beyond will drop in value.

Suspens at drop time... Followed by happiness or sadness... And same player play again the next day!
But the guy with tenacity, being able to do it day after day, will catch some fish.

I appreciate your attention to detail not many people would be able to tell us if words sound good with numbers.
I do something very basic. Say the name few times before deciding to catch it.

ng64.com
ro36.com
m9re.com

I like NG64.com best, because NG has many 'translations', such as:
NG:ε—η“œ>Pumpkin
NG:ε†œθ€•>Farming

64 can mean:
64:乐世>A generation of fun

How about a site to sell farming products or services which give you a whole generation of fun?

There are very few 'translations' for 'O' as in RO. I couldn't find a good one for RO36.com.

I didn't like M9RE.com at first because of the complicated pattern, but...
RE is excellent because it stands for real estate. A name such as M9 real estate company?
