... your domain names would all be free.

OK there would be a small cost associated with the software needed to catalogue and sort out who has what name. but that would cost pennies.

the internet originally was free. who gave ICANN ''ownership'' of the domain name space? how did they get to ''own'' this, where they can hold auctions for the right to ''manage/ own'' extensions?

and if a company pays $millions for the exclusive right to dispense those extensions, then where does that money go? we can guess that once a company does ''own'' an extension, the money on sales of those names goes right into their bank account. who originally gave ICANN the right to assign that right?

so you pay Verisign 10 per year to ''own'' your domain because they ''own'' dot-com. or you pay Donuts co 30 per year for your 'dot-school because they now ''own'' it.

it used to be free. why isn't it free anymore? and why do you pay so much to ''own'' something (albiet at a recurring charge every year) something that used to be free? when did it stop being free and why?

ps. Burkina Faso could ''own'' their own internet and use any name they want there. they could ''own'' house dot --- and bank dot --- and it wouldn't bother anyone else because it was all within their borders, in their own internet, managed/ run by their own ''burkinacann'' ....
