The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

After reputation, it comes to verification.

When logging in, pushing domains or for any other stuff, if they have 2FA (Two Factor Authentication) as sms or other kind, then this is a good asset.

GoDaddy, Dynadot, Namebright and NameSilo registrars are examples for these.

There are a lot of parameters to cover when discussing security. Do they have SSL across all pages (not just login page etc), 2 factor auth, what are their policies etc on reclaiming stolen names, what is their password reset policy (should be a reset function not reminder or email it to you).

Plus other things. On Dynadot, for example, I've noticed when you unlock your account to push a name it's auto relocked in a small time frame (10 mins maybe?). I'm sure most do this, but it's another thing to look for. Or at least make sure they show warnings that your domain/account is not locked.

Uniregistry.com, GoDaddy.com, Name.com, NameCheap.com, and the list goes on. It all depends on how secure your password is and what measures you take to protect your assets.

2FA is essential on all your main Registrars.

Avoid anyone without 2FA and SSL.

Secure and clean UI I love it.

They have been hacked :) So... of course it doesn't mean all the others will never be.

Usually domain theft is the result of a user-side security failure and due to:
  • phishing
  • admin E-mail lapsed or compromised
  • computer infected with trojan
  • reusing the same password at different places

What kind of issue? Can you please tell us ?

There will be hundreds of people each month with problems with all of the main registrars, same as any large company. One persons gripe does not affect another person's perfect experience, so I wouldn't worry about what problems individual people have.

Just concentrate on the important things like SSL, secure passwords, 2 factor auth, etc.

You're never going to get a perfect registrar which has no mistakes or problems, or even just niggles. Just use them: Namecheap, Dynadot, GoDaddy, Uniregistry, etc.

I agree @Kate - But I don't hear any claims from any registrars that they haven't been hacked by user-side security failures :) Also, I took the question to mean hacked by something the Registrar should or could have prevented. I still think they are the best registrar for this question. Who would you propose as an alternative?

I have domains are nearly all the registrars, security is paramount for me.

NameSilo is by far the best IMO.

  • 2FA when logging in.
  • up to 5 defender questions needed to be answered when making ANY amendment to a domain.
  • Email notifications can be set upon every account login and/or domain amendments.

All are bunch of vultures. Yeah, some of them could be lesser of two evils.
One piece of advice is:
  • Don't rely on your registrars when it comes to renewal issues.
  • Keep track of your domains
  • Look for the affordable registrar. Don't spend a ridiculous amount of money on domain reg.
  • Some registrars would try to trick you by luring you into a 99cents deal for the first year. However, after one year, they will devour you mercilessly when your domains are up for renewal. If you are paying more than $9 per dotcom renewal, you are not a savvy domainer.
All the best!

Now if only they didn't hold your domain for 60 days after an auction, like GoDaddy does. They'd be almost perfect. 2FA when logging in is probably the biggest security measure everyone should be using. IMHO.

For " long term investors", i think 99 cents is great offer:) if i find such this offer, i will jump :) After 6-7 months i will transfer it to another. So, 1 year more will be add to my domains.
That is good.
