Search problem

How often do you need to search for content posted more than a few months ago?

  • 1st

Sometimes. I'm equally interested in old and new content. Old content search would be very useful.

Not often. I'm usually only interested in recent content, but old content search would be nice.

Often. Search would be significantly more useful to me if old content were easily searchable.

Never. I'm only interested in recent content. Old content search wouldn't be helpful to me.

OK this was a fail

The best I could do is use "Search Threads and Posts" instead of "Everything" AND pick a specific sub-forum instead of searching everything
That got results from Sept 2015

If I left it on All Forums and Child Forums, still using "Search Threads and Posts" instead of "Everything" it only showed back to Nov 2015

I thought got it to work if you use Advanced Search and then put an OLD date in the box that says "Newer Than:" Then use the little pop-up calendar and hit the left arrow to go back months or years

I could NOT just enter a date in this format 2013-01-25 but what did work is typing the date in the "Posted by Member:" box and then cutting and pasting into the "Newer Than:" That was kinda weird.

For a random date I picked 2007-10-28 Showing results 1 to 20 of 73

Then I actually looked at the results and the oldest was Jan 2016

@Megist Are you looking for past sales or something specific? Have you tried site search at google or other search engine?

  • The maximum number of search results is currently 200. You won't see anything beyond that even if there are more.
  • If you don't have permission to see some of the results (for example, they've been deleted/archived), you may see fewer than 200 results even when there are actually many more than that. Search returns the top 200-300 results, and then any that you don't have permission to view are hidden, resulting in a lower number. There may actually be thousands more than you can view.
  • Recency affects relevance. I've decreased the impact that it has after reading this thread, but it still has some effect. The relevance of content halves for every 4 years since its existence. For example, content posted today would be 2 times more relevant than identical content posted 4 years ago, 4 times more relevant than content posted 8 years ago, and 8 times more relevant than content posted 12 years ago. (In technical terms, the half-life of a post's relevance is 4 years.) Recency had significantly more impact prior to this adjustment, with a half-life of 60 days.
  • There isn't an "Older Than" field for search, but it would be possible to add one.

I've added a poll to this thread; be sure to vote!

it will be very usefull if we will be able to search between dates.
Also it will be helpfull for newbe domainers, they will compare last years domain market and prices.

I really very interest in old posts.

Many of the forum software's that sites are built around just aren't made for to extravagant of a search. In my experience the best way to work around this is to do a Google search for what you are looking for and choose a custom date range for the search.

Type in something like - Namepros 6n. Then go to the "Search Tools" section under the Google results and change the date range to what you want. Type the site, namepros is good enough and what you are looking for. Helps me out a lot when searching forums.

Here's your Google search for Namepros 6n:

Cheers :)

I've always found things easier in Google than searching these forum sites. Forum search functions need and update! ;)

Good luck my friend, I hope you find the info you want. :)

The search on NamePros is better than most forums because Paul has spent a lot of time customizing and improving it for us. B-)

Yes, I definitely agree. The search function here is much better that what I have found/used before.

It would be nice for the software creators to put a bit more time into the search functions. Maybe one day.

I have used the SEARCH THREADS and POSTS page of this site many times and found the SEARCH function quite easy-to-use and seemingly comprehensive.

I have located desired Search "Keywords " as far back as 2007 ( and possibly further back) used by NP members in a variety of postings.

For my many uses the NamePros SEARCH function is very well done and very useful, an excellent tool!

I completely agree, the search functionality is pretty open to manipulation.

However, I think some more functions would be really welcomed, such as:
  • sort by (time, user, whatever)
  • don't return closed
  • only return with total/min X replies

Great suggestions! I've added a few of these to our development roadmap. Thanks. :)

The ability to only return threads with a minimum of X replies already exists:
