Well the .WS registry has been in the news this week for releasing all 5N to 20N combinations last night, and 2 and 3 character .ws will be available later in Feb with new pricing scheme.

Obviously the China story may be creating a new market for short .WS domains. ALL of the NNNN.ws were bought out over three days this past December according to thedomains.com blog.

I registered some 5N.ws last night when they were released, anyone else stepping into .WS now?

Back in the day (2009) I made my first decent flip. And it was a .ws. I sold pain.ws on Bido for $517.00 after buying it on eBay for $20.00. After that I don't think I ever profited more than $20 or $25 on any .ws and lost more than I made.

However, I have always had a soft spot for .ws since it was my "first". I truly hope that it can ris up from the ashes. It makes sense in that ws can stand for website. Time will tell, but I am pulling for it and even piced up 50 or so 4N and 5N .ws this past week.

As far as .ws goes it's short, could be website or something in Chinese. I don't think it has any negative connotation that biz and mobi had for years.

I almost look at it as a sort of new gtld. I never paid attention to it before just like I didn't pay attention to 200 other cctld's. But if it's marketed right who knows what can happen.

Marketing will be the key, look at .co or .xyz, that was the key for them.

.vc not even Chinese premium letters but I'm getting 4 figure offers on my LL's and they're selling on auctions every week. All the offers are Chinese. There was only minimal marketing for VC as venture capital.

Most numbers except NNNN and a few other exceptions were all restricted, even LLLL.ws were restricted until recently. So I wouldn't have expected the Chinese to be using it in the past, there was very little available that they like. Ironically there are a few Chinese sites up on .ws despite this.

When you break it down, you have to ask yourself
-does it make sense as an extension, I think it does.
-is it cheap enough to be an acceptable speculative risk, it is now
-what names can I get now at reg fee? Basically it's the ground floor, all kinds of good stuff now available that never was before.

If it passes this test in your mind, then the new branding and team behind it are a good sign and an added bonus.

.cc worked with no marketing, no support from verisign and high reg fees.

I agree. Additional plus is that it is easy to push/transfer between accounts at Godaddy or other registrars. And it has no restrictions on ownership. Maybe the time has come for .WS - sort of how .XYZ had the unforeseen benefit of having a positive Chinese meaning. But .WS could be better than a lot of the other second and third tier extensions.

Somehow, by some miracle I made a few hundred dollars in .ws sales in 2015.

My last one left is gamers.ws, which I think is a pretty strong and short keyword name.

You better have a very very premium 4N.ws to go against an ok 6N.com if you want someone to buy it that doesn't understand chinese numerology

There are already hundreds of tlds and they all compete with .com so it better be the best numbers or there is no competition.

No trying to be harsh on your .ws but just want you to not put to much cash in one pot, which it doesn't look like you are with some of the domains you have listed there.

A few things. One, you don't have to, and shouldn't put your eggs all in one basket. Dot com vs dot WS doesn't have to be a choice. Your domain portfolio should have good stable assets and some good ROI aka higher risk, higher reward domains.

Two, When you invest in a TLD you are investing in the registry. The people behind it. You are trusting that they are going to spend the time and money to make sure the general public knows its a choice. An analysis of what new TLDs have taken off comes down to a few things and dot WS is adjusting to make sure they incorporate those traits.

That's why I'm invested and become part of the team. Hoping that the domain buyers who invest their money and trust get great returns for their efforts. And those that don't believe in it share why so maybe .WS can understand why people don't like it and adjust accordingly. Although "because I can get a better return elsewhere and I just don't like it" aren't going to help a lot.

I really don't know. There are certainly plans to meet with Chinese registrars and to meet face to face. I can't speak for the registry. I work with, not for.

.ws has actually good meanings in chinese.
actually it already has sales for.ws in china.
i.have contacts who have several thousands nnnn and.will want more nnnnn once nnnnn gets available.

"09666.ws" which means "you will be Lucky forever" in chinese.

I just scanned ~95% of NNNN.ws and no more good ones. Around ~1928 left +/- . Some have just been taken up. I also just picked up one.

Yes, I am curious too, now that GD has the $5 price also. I actually paid more ($9 each) for two 5N cuz dynadot wouldn't let me login and resellerclub said they were not available, then a day or two later RC opened up, maybe they forgot to look at the memo? LOL

Anyone know what GD was selling these for before they dropped the price?

This was just a test for me, I only got three each 4N and 5N, all mine have zeros and two have 4's cuz they repeat and I think that's neat so phooey on chips : wink :

I bought a .ws at GD Closeouts for $11 a month and a half ago. They charged me an additional $19.99 for renewal, so maybe that was also the price to hand-reg at that point: $20 basically?

If the Chinese start to take to .ws the 5N and 4L chips will start to go fast.

Remember only about 32k 5N chips vs 160k 4L chips.

Really .ws should have been out there marketing harder when the new gtlds came out. To brand themselves as 'web site'. They can at least be as good an option as xyz, link, click, biz, info, club, ... Etc and maybe better because it's shorter.

You need and want the registries to create want. I can buy that keyword everywhere now. Eventually I will be able to buy that keyword with 1000 different ends or the ending will be that keyword with millions of different left of the dot combinations. First of all, I am an advisor. The real work is being done by the owners not me. The Chinese market is the first market to be addressed. And why shouldn't it? Its a much bigger market.

I don't know what the GDI mlm thing is but I said the new push is. 1. Make holding cost or renewal cheaper. 2. Showcase how people are using .WS because they are. Try and get more people to use the TLD, not just buy and sell it like trading. 3. Get rid of all the bad info that is out there. You CAN move names back and forth from registries, it doesn't cost to move etc. 4. Make it as easy and cheap as possible for Chinese buyers.

When? It's in progress now.

All 1 person, looks like Australia. Had to check the site nicked.net, some dropcatcher. Other .ws they have up for auction, all 0 bids. 1 person isn't any kind of movement.

Only other 2 sales Namebio have for the year:

properties.ws - $170
proxy.ws - $165

Only 9 reported sales for 2015, only 1 breaking $1,000. That one was some company getting sued for piracy.

Had a few of these myself back in the day, great keywords like Holland, sold if for $62, couldn't get more. Others, couldn't sell.

It's pretty dead, has been for awhile now. We'll see if the Chinese can pump some life into it, numerics at best. Regular keywords, probably not. Nothing pointing to that happening, especially with all these new gtlds and .web which can mean the same thing.

I agree .ws has been pretty dead up until lately.

Also agree I'd forget about keywords, unless maybe they were Chinese words or pinyin (ex: Yao, Ming, Lian...)

Short number and letter combos could move up in price as it appears .WS is going to be promoting the extension more in China. .WS to me seems like an extension that could catch on in China. Also they just released the 5N and up numerics to general availability, and will be releasing 2 and 3 character combos later this month. This could generate some news and interest in the extension, for domain investors who like short 'Chips'.

Six sales all of a sudden for a 'dead' extension might show renewed interest. It may be nothing, or it may be a start. Nicked does have other NNNN.ws on auction with no bids, but only 5 of them. So they've sold over half, is another way to look at it.

I think most people with NNNN.ws will be holding and waiting right now.

Anyway, we'll see how the domain market does after Chinese New Year, which I think ends Feb 15.

Still think we will see a pick up of the .ws this year, when they start to release 2 and 3 character names it will start making the news. Only global extension left at a low reg fee where you can still get good 5N and 4L.

With first year prices for 2-3 char still $500 or $1000 I don't see anything exciting about the release. They haven't confirmed what the prices will actually be, so I'm curious, yet not expecting any huge buying spree. I could be wrong, it is interesting none the less.
