tips How Are Domain Names Priced in China?

NameSilo
If you are selling domain names to China, how do you set favorable prices on your domains? Are there any rules or standards that Chinese sellers use? Do the last few digits play an important role? This strategy is often referred to as psychological pricing, charm pricing, or price ending, and it is based on the notion that certain prices may improve the chances of a sale.

I did a quick and small survey to find out by using the data available on 4.cn's domain marketplace. I used data from the BIN Sale page available on December 27. It showed 5,604,752 domain names for sale. I selected the default display settings and then collected data from ten pages.

From the collected data, I removed domain names selling in US$ because the sellers may likely be non-Chinese and may not follow any pricing standards or strategies used in China. 531 domain names priced in CNY were obtained, and here's what I've found:
  1. The most popular last three digits used for prices is 888, e.g., 88888 CNY or 5888 CNY. This price ending appeared on 308 domain names.
  2. The second most popular is 000, appearing on 110 domain names.
  3. The third most popular is 999, appearing on 55 domain names.

How about the number 4, which is considered to be an unlucky number in most cases? Do sellers avoid the 4,xxx pattern and price domain names at 5,000 for example? This survey does not show any preference. 32 domain names were priced at 4,888 CNY and 29 domain names at 5,000 CNY.

In conclusion, while this is not a comprehensive survey, it does suggest one rule that we can use: if in doubt, end your price with 888.

Thank you once again Kassey.
"The second most popular is 000" , but people keep saying that zero is bad. No it isn't, anywhere, ever.

0 is often used on prices, ZIP Codes and dialing codes. How can it be bad on domain names? So much nonsense...

I agree with you, @DNabc. I like t end a number with 0 because it's much easier for me to remember later.

BTW, I hope to revisit this topic and do a more comprehensive study in the future.

The dreaded "4" is at the beginning of the local call charge phone numbers in China, as in "400"
It probably is more about numbers' position and their specific use, than about some Feng Shui rules...

their specific use,
Good observation. Actually, I have never been bothered with this issue for years. 4.cn has been a very successful company.

Thank you. Did you know 999 is the phone number for emergency services (police, fire, ambulance)?

I read not long ago 4 and 8 together = forever prosperous add 88 maybe reason for (4,8)(88) pricing
I'm going with the 9's for 2016 as it is a 9 year in several number beliefs.
Cheers !.
Happy Happy New Year Kassey Lee + Ya'LL.

Happy New Year to you, 168. Look forward to more discussion with you in 2016. BTW, I just love the expression Ya'LL.. I particularly like the Texan/Southern Accent because they have so much character! I was once given a book on how to speak southern but never manage to speak with that sort of style. I only remember how to say Texas by stretching it for many seconds. Hi Texas, I love you!

Great work Kassey. The 0 and 4 have value based on their position. Those who say they are bad are mainly resellers who when I asked why they hate simply told me many times they have trouble selling to another reseller .

@Abdullah Abdullah, Thanks for the kind words. When I look at a domain name, I always try to think: can a company use this domain name to build a business? This means the domain name needs to be relatively short and also easy to remember. Chip or not, I don't think about it. I do research to find out if the name can be used this way.

That is how it should always be even if it is numeric domains. I sometimes see people who says74888507 is great because it contains 888 when in fact it is beyond bad lol .Having atleast 3 patterns in a numeric domain increases its value and marketability

numeric domains
I actually have difficulty with long numeric domain names. It's very difficult to find meaning so as to make it easy for consumers to remember. Of course, for speculation, people don't need to care about consumers.

Some marketplaces like Buydomains have had prices ending in 88/888 for as long as I can remember. Maybe there is a reason :)
