I believe only short and easy-to-remember domain names are sustainable, regardless of where in the world you live and which cultural background you come from.

Now that the Chinese domain market has become a hot topic, I myself want to understand this trend too. Is there any real meaning behind each domain name sold in China? Here, I'd like to share with you what I've found as I read the Chinese news everyday.

GZX.com
GZX can stand for 更自信 (even more self-confident) which can be used in many fields such as education, self-help, and even consumer products to raise your self image.

XLY.com
XLY can stand for 夏令营 (summer camp) or 新领域 (new field) which can be used in recreation and high-tech products.

JD.com
JD stands for 京东 (JingDong). Was formerly 360buy.com. It's said that the US$3 m purchase of JD.com has saved them US$20 m in search engine placements and other advertising costs (every year?)

ZXD.com
ZXD stands for 在线贷 (online lending), a lending marketplace for small loans. It's an upgrade from the more difficult-to-remember OLDAI.cn

So I guess zx =online then?

Does it have any other meaning?

I
What about xy,zx,zy qx?

Do these have any meaning?

Do the Chinese use letters and numbers combined much?

If you can list a few other examples like these 2 letter acronymns and add translations that would be awesome!

XY
Many cominbations possible. Let me give you just two. (1) 仙药 (elixir of immortality) How about a brand for a pharmacetical company?) (2)喜游 (happy tour). Anyone in the tourism business?

ZX
Again, many combinations possible. For example: 真笑 (true smile). How about using it as an oral product brand?

QX
This is is even better than ZX. 千笑 (thousand smiles).

ZY
Ditto. Just for a little bit of fun. How about 租友 (friend renting)? There must be many lonely souls in the country of 1.3 billion people.

That's enough for now.

I sold bwz.com to China and was getting lots of inquiries. Do those letters mean anything or just was there "premium" generally?

Here are some possible combinations off the top of my head.

BWZ
不外走 (don't go outside)
不武争 (don't resolve conflict with force)
步稳重(walk steadily)
不微赚 (make no small profit)

There may be many more possibilities. Branding with letters or numbers is an art which requires a lot of thinking.

Sorry folks. 4L/4N or more takes a lot of time to find meaningful Chinese phrases, so can't help at this stage.

Do you have an opinion about numbers too?

Hi photonmymind, I like numbers. As a matter of fact, I like anything that's short and easy to remember.

Short ones are long gone and for millions!
We are talking about more "down to earth" names here from 6 to 9.
Last day, for example, I found out that 888 666 888 was registered in 2010 by a Chinese!...And people are still thinking that 9 digits will never sell...

What do you think about the value of 5L

Hey thanks. I thought GNGZH is Guangzhou

GNGZH isn't altogether terrible, it just doesn't resolve well into a complete pinyin acronym regardless of how it is parsed (i.e. GN GZH, GNG ZH, GNGZ H ...).

The biggest problem is the 'h'. It kills the best combination, GNGZ. GNGZ is a nice 4L.

I'm happy to have a look at one or two more for you, or anyone for that matter, but no more than that as it does consume a little time to investigate properly.

I'd consider examining a larger list of 4L/5L for a small fee per word, but that's a separate matter.

In the long run, 5L must make sense to investors in China for them to have real values. My2C.

Yes you are right. It doesn't represent the pinyin configuration of GuangZhou. I was looking at if you take away the vowels in a word and leave only the premium letters, will it still be seen as an acronym for that word?

For example, if you search GNGZH in Google, you will see GuangZhou as the result

勇狗 (courageous dog)
