What are the criteria for determining a premium names?

Depends on the seller of the domain.
That is the bottom line from what I have seen on this forum and others.
Just say, hey, this is a premium domain!

Premium domain names are set the by registry of the extension.

For example, the .DIAMONDS registry has set Exquisite.diamonds as a premium domain, with equally premium prices for registration, renewal and transfers. These domains are chosen at the registry's sole-discretion.

However for .COM/.NET/.ORG, the central registry does not offer premium domains, however domainers will still refer to quality names as 'premium'.

For someone on Fab's 'staff' to make this statement is somewhat suspect and msleading! If one is referring to the new gTLDs, then there's some backing to this, and even then a lot of their 'premiums' are subject to being considered so by the registry, and a lot of others that are not called premium, are. Usually if they feel they can draw more money at original registration, then they (the new gTLD registry's) consider them premium. But Verisign, PIR, and other tld registry's do not, and never did (and still don't) 'set' which domains were/are premium or were not! Domains that are highly coveted i.e., one-worders that are a product/service or just plain highly popular terms/words; short domains like ll's and lll's and nn's and nnn's which have limited quantities available; are what usually constitutes being a premium. There are other standards too, but usually are subjective to their meaning/memorability/uniqueness that can qualify them as premium. Unfortunately here on NP, and places like ebay, every domain seems to be considered 'premium', but is really more of a ploy to draw the attention of prospective buyers and those not knowing or understanding what truly constitutes being a 'premium' domain and will/can hopefully be sucked in to purchase them.

I always took it as high value, high quality names such as toys.com, loans.com etc....

The term premium is so over used today that ultra-premium has to be used for genuine "premium" domain names. (unless there is mis-guidance again)

I reckon a premium domain is any domain of high value due to high demand. Could be however that the domain is depreciating over time, such as the drop in value of .xyz domains.

If a domain has more than one bidder when being dropped it's probably a premium domain

I think a premium domain is that which is keyword based having good traffic and having age. It necessarily should be short one.

For me the ultra-premiums are as follows:

- Single word, English Dictionary, Positive Meaning a big plus (single or plural)
- Few of those above with e, i in front
- LL.com, NN.com, NNN.com (super-ultra-premium)
-LLL.com, CC.com, L-L.com, NNNN.com
- Easily Pronounceable LLLL.com, English Premium LLLL.com, Chinese Premium LLLL.com, better yet, combination of those )) Some of pronounceables could be at LLL.com level value. Some of NNNNN.com
- Most important top single words in popular languages (like shop, finance, car, home, etc.), Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Turkish, French, German etc. either in .com or, often better, in cctld of the country. Plus LLL, LL of the cctld. Examples I own: GE.DE, Juventud.com and Juventude.com (Youth in Spanish and Portuguese)
- Geo names in .com, net, org, . relevant cctld . The more population, the better.
- One letter cctlds
