I just submitted PetAirlines.com, a 2006 Reg. with 1000 exacts/mo and $1 CPC, for top domains listing.
Unfortunately, my listing was denied with a vague reason like it doesn't meet top domains standards.

I just checked the other domains listed in top domains and stats on those, here they are:
Zerbick.com, Slyco.com, PacificNorthWest.com, SharedHost.com, Fiviy.com, Gravesite.com, Defibrillating.com

IMO, PetAirlines.com is a very relevant and meaningful name in Pet transportation and perhaps more valuable that these names listed above. If I had submitted any of these names, I am sure none would have been selected. On what basis they were selected? Please see the Adwords screenshot given at the end, PetAirlines.com is at no. 2 with a reasonable search volume.

@Eric Lyon I find this a little worrisome as it raises some basic questions which you can help me with here.

Who checks if the domain is good or not? Are we subject to whim of some individual moderator? Do we have a process in place for this or the top domains section is just an insider club only open for people perosnally known to the individual moderators?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
We have 2 appraisal forums if you would like to ask for an appraisal (This isn't the proper forum for that).

Public Appraisals (Free for all members): https://www.namepros.com/forums/domain-appraisal.3/

Professional Appraisals (Available for VIP's & Business Members): https://www.namepros.com/forums/professional-appraisals.242/

As for the TOP Domains forum, this is a topic that has been discussed numerous times. First off, lets take a look at the Rules of that forum:
6.3. Top Domains (Β»)
6.3.1. Do not modify your approved thread to include other domain names.
6.3.2. Do not initiate a conversation with staff to discuss the status on your Top Domains thread.
6.3.3. Only one new thread per 24 hours is permitted in this section.
Top Domains FAQ:
b. Why can’t I ask the staff about the thread status in Top Domains?
i. Threads created in this section are hand-selected for approval in order to maintain the highest standards of approximating a $1000 reseller value of a domain. Remember that reseller values may be as low as 10-20% of potential end-user value. There are too many new threads created on a daily basis in Top Domains for NamePros staff to respond to private inquires regarding them.
ii. If you notice that your thread has moved from moderation to not being visible, or your thread is not added within 72 hours, you can assume that it wasn’t approved.
iii. NamePros selects the best domains submitted with consideration given to fair coverage of members and extensions. Your thread will be listed within 72 hours if accepted.
iv. It's recommended to review the domains listed in Top Domains for their caliber, quality, and type and the information contained in their posts for more accurate submissions.
I'm sure we can both agree that a short 5 or 6 letter, pronounceable, brandable domain can't really be compared to an 11 letter, 2 word, generic domain. They are completely different markets, so not sure why you compared them as similar above.

Keep in mind that what one person deals with daily and considers the gem of all times, most others will see it as a chunk of dirt. It goes both ways. We try to keep the evaluation process fair by checking all 27 valuing factors you see listed here:
1.) Is the domain Pronounceable?
2.) How many characters are in the domain?
3.) If a short character domain, are they premium letters?
4.) Is the domain currently developed?
5.) If developed, how many pages are indexed?
6.) If developed, Is it original or duplicate content?
7.) Was the domain previously developed?
8.) Does the domain currently generate any Revenue?
9.) What are a few development possibilities for this domain?
10.) What is the obvious target market(s)?
11.) Is there any keyword value (cpc)?
12.) Is there any keyword competition?
13.) What are the top competing sites for this domain?
14.) What is the Alexa score?
15.) What is the root domain PageRank (PR)?
16.) Is the domain a dictionary word?
17.) What language is the domain?
18.) Does the language of the domain match the extension?
19.) How many backlinks does the domain have?
20.) What have some similar domains sold for in the past?
21.) Is this domain a Trademark (TM)?
22.) Is this domain a trend that has a limited window of opportunity?
23.) How old is the domain?
24.) Is the domain taken in other top extensions?
25.) Is the domain Brandable?
26.) Does the domain have any traffic?
27.) If traffic, What are the traffic sources?
It's rare to see many people using all 27 factors when they appraise a domain, so naturally there's going to be different opinions and views on value. At the end of the day, we do try to limit the amount of questionable domains from being listed in order to retain some of the sanctity of the Top Domain forum. If some slip through the cracks that others don't agree with, we apologize for offending you. However, there's no perfect way to evaluate a domain that will please everyone. So we do the best we can. At least you don't see names like: hellomyfriend.info, chargemycellphonetoday.com, jumpupanddown.org, wiggleyourloosebits.net, arereduparound.com, etc... There's more names than you can imagine that get declined every day from being listed. It's a constant filtering process that never ends and occasionally, as mentioned before, one may slip through some don't agree with.

One thing we can all probably agree on though, is that everyone holds some sentimental value for their own names & thus feel's theirs is better than others. Just like people that focus on a single niche will see more value in related niche names than names in other peoples niches.

Thanks for understanding,

Eric Lyon

6.3.2. Do not initiate a conversation with staff to discuss the status on your Top Domains thread.

It was not done. This is just a general discussion, with a specific example, on the parameters that are being applied to name screening for top domains.

*Most* short LLLLL brandables sell a dime a dozen. Instead of focussing only on the no. of letters, we should focus on the QUALITY of the name as revealed by searches/mo and CPC etc. which is point 11/12 of the rules.

Thank you. While that may be your intention but please take a look at the quality of the *most* of listed domains in the TOP DOMAINS sections, I have already shared the adwords snapshots. Some have no search volume and no CPC at all. Names like Zerbick.com, Slyco.com, PacificNorthWest.com, SharedHost.com, Fiviy.com, Gravesite.com, Defibrillating.com, what parameters of the 27 points these satisfy is what I don't understand. Even a noob wouldn't place these anywhere near $100. Why do we allow those to continue being listed as top domains?

I am not complaining here from the sentimental angle Eric, please look at that attached Google Adwords screenshot, compare the names and think for a moment yourself if my raised concern is right or wrong.

It's not that if I don't get PetAirlines.com listed here, my business will die down. I only sell very few domains here.

But the whole point is let's right the wrongs and allow all a fair chance at exposure of their portfolio. I hope you understand.

Relying soley on google adwords as a basis for value is only 1 of the 27 factors I mentioned above. We can't justify every domain in the world based on just google adwords competition. Rather than getting into a debate that would seemingly just run in circles, I feel my original statement covers everything I have to say on this topic. Sadly you and I may have to just respectfully disagree with one another.

If you would like an appraisal on your domain from other members (Veterans included) to see what they feel the value of your premium domain is, please use one of our appraisal forums.

Thanks,

If your name was Pettransportation.com it would be in the auction

Instead its an off idea brandable.

Why do we find the idea so difficult? Look here: a picture is worth more than 1000 words :)

That's alright but have these other above-mentioned domains taken appraisals here as well? You are avoiding discussing their quality vis-a-vis PetAirlines.com. Looking the other way if there is an issue wouldn't really settle it. I am sure I am not the only one to have this problem here. So, even though I do admire you, but not really satisfied with this typical response, it provides no resolution at all. But since you just cite the rulebook, I will just drop it.

The idea fine, but not practical in the sense you see in the pic (airplane for pets) Hence the "Pet Airways is not in service at this time".

But that's quite Ok. We are not discussing the current feasibility/status of idea here.
Even the mere existence of such a business today proves the value of the name.
Probably their idea is a little ahead of time, probbaly their were not enough reservations? But we can't say pets wouldn't fly in future. There are many exclusive pet hotels in the US alone now, who would service (transport) them if not airlines?

The feasibility one huge factor why it was declined for the auction. The other is it does not define the category. Sorry to keep posting about this, just want you to fully understand why it not in the top domains auction.

You are forgetting that people are now getting millions for domains registered only a decade back. So, this is a forward looking business.

Anyway John, let's kill PetAirlines.com, just please kindly explain how these ones are there? Which of the 27 parameters cited by Eric above do they satisfy? I wouldn't give $10 for any of these, spare perhaps SharedHost.com

Zerbick.com, Slyco.com, PacificNorthWest.com, SharedHost.com, Fiviy.com, Gravesite.com, Defibrillating.com

Discussion is good, it sorts out doubts of a lot of people.

Do you really have to ask?

The pure brandable (no keywords) ones are at the auction's discretion. The others are "top domains".

EDIT: I added to the post so you can understand the placings better. Good Luck

Exactly my point. Now since this is a public forum, we got to make sure our *discretion* stays fair to all and is not misused towards personal profiteering of a few.

Anyway, I got my answer here. No point debating this thread. It's quite useless. :)

Thx for your response though John.
