"I think the Google Alphabet thing will have a noteworthy impact on .XYZ domain values but not due to mass adoption. Instead, I think that just like with Dot IO, the price jump will come from startup/tech world adoption. Nothing more, nothing less.

A lot of domainers are not very good at drawing realistic conclusions.

If Google would have decided to move the actual search engine to ABC.XYZ then sure, mass adoption would have been facilitated. People use the search engine each and every day, so one plus one equals two. Them registering and using ABC.XYZ in the manner in which they’ll actually do it however will not generate mass adoption. Yes, the news received MASSIVE exposure (even in publications from my country) but people have ridiculously short attention spans."

A sensible article written by Andrei on Domaining Tips. This has got me thinking!
What do you think?

Keep an eye on this guy... looks like he has been looking around here reading some of the posts that many of us have written. o.0
Quite a few of us have been preaching the same sentiments about the .XYZ as a passing glint of fame once people figure out that has been set in whole up for the cute factor and for a holding company that no one is going to pay much attention to.

So add this article to the common sense list.
I am sure if Google wanted to make a name for a particular domain extension.... they would probably choose one of their own extensions and run with that. They seem to have a huge list of them with more coming out soon.
This was just a one shot (one off) cute domain pickup that was followed by other domain registrations in other extensions as well (alphabet.TOP, alphabet.HORSE). I think the point is made there.

Just my thoughts.

Cheers

There should be a law for domainers "Let’s Not Get Carried Away" by anything. To much herd mentality. When a hype kicks in you are already to late to the party most often.

I think everyone should simple do whatever is within their acceptable level of risk. Nothing has changed. There is no advice or guidance that fits everyone. This is not a one size fits all business. Some people are willing to risk thousands on domains that others would call quite speculative. Others obsess on spending $10 for a dot com.

Couldn't this be seen as Google preempting the market? I mean, if Google has a cache of extensions, with more coming out, why would they invest in this way if they consciously knew their .xyz thing was a "cute" one off shot?

First off, let's keep in context what Google is using ABC for.

It is for their holding company and not an active business that the average person would frequent.

Ask yourself... how many times have you gone to Google holding prior to this news?
This is not to be confused with Google(dot)com. The are two different sites.

If they changed Google(dot)com to ABC(dot)xyz, then I would wholeheartedly agree that this would be a game changer but that is not what has been done here. They have changed their holding company to XYZ.

Google owns domain names in a number of extensions, this is not new. If you changed up the XYZ extension to anything else (keeping the same stats, same distribution model, same everything) and Google would not have purchased the domain. They would have either created the XYZ extension *OR* more likely bought Alphabet(dot)com.

It's not the branding, it's not the distribution model, it's probably not even the extension they like. It was the fact that it was already there, it was available, it's cute, it's off the beaten path, and it fits with the name Google already decided on.

I could be wrong but I don't think this is a game changer at all.
We have seen these kinds of domain purchases before (a.co, g.co, no_url_shorteners, and more famously o.co). All of these are domains are being used in some form by BIG companies but have only made a small ripple in the adaptation of that extension. Not game changer by any means

Just my thoughts

Cheers

I think their will be some attrition as far as gTLDs ... the only thing that the abc.xyz reg does is to make sure .xyz isn't one of them. The rest of it is up to market forces which, and as noted in this thread, abc.xyz is just a (temporary) publicity bump.

One thing I don't like about .xyz is that it doesn't have a great keyboard type-in flow. The alternating hands x to y to z is good, but the x and z are too close together making it awkward to type (and using the weaker pinky).

I think that is one factor that is overlooked in general in domain names. A truly great domain name will have a great keyboard flow, making it an ease to type.

Personally, I like all the hype with the .xyz extension.

It get's the competition for the good domains in the established extensions distracted so that I can get more domains that I will have not been able to get before. ;)

Since many people (especially new domainers) are getting caught up with the whole .xyz hype, they are looking at and registering names as well as spending money they would have otherwise spent on names I might be interested in. This leaves more good names available at lower prices and less competition that before the hype! ;)

""640 kB ought to be enough for anybody" - do you remember those famous words guys :)

Internet is changing before your eyes - and many things will change in next 5-10 years!
It will result in:

a) no more .COM dominance (only the best domains will still be "in game" for big bucks)
b) much more space for people to register domain of their choice for less money

I hear many times words about:
- trust
- tradition
- hacking

And I have to say that I do not trust any site by default - you can be hacked on .com as well:)
Here I have to point that for example new domains will have an advantage - some of them will only allow qualified business (banks, realtors, etc.)
So here is even a plus for new domains regarding security!
Tradition (!?) - tempora mutantur ...

Google had to do something to start attracting people and showing them - that now do they have a more freedom.
And you have to do with your own example to show you are serious about that:)
On the end they will not loose anything but only make a profit with this - more domains, more websites, more advertising. They want more live audience on net to get more customers!

Google will have the most profit by the fact mentioned before: more interest - more money.
The only winner in this game to eliminate dominance of dot COM - is Google.

So - they made a very clever move - and if I had a position in this company - I have even more long-therm proposals - but they employ a clever people - so I think they already know what I am talking.

In any case - guys I would start to think to sell domains - because in a couple of years - only the best dot COMs will still have a big value.

Remember:
I am not saying this will change over night - but it is a process which goes in one way direction !!

I agree with you. With so much choice now, only good Dot Com names will have value in the future. All the ones that make no sense will just fade away MO.
I do not get the Dot xyz. It has a terrible type in word flow, makes no sense, sounds terrible in marketing campaigns. Just say the word aloud after a keyword, most of them sound daft. Don't they give them away for free anyway?

this part is spot on

.xyz with abc.xyz had what we call "15 seconds of fame"

Everything has affects, whether direct or indirect on market value of domain names.

The abc thing probably helped .xyz tld value increase for the short term at an accelerated rate above that of normal trends (if any) for a new gtld.

So maybe if your .xyz was worth $20 before this event, it might now be worth $22, given an immediate market affect of 10% rise in value.

Expect the "bump" to slowly drop and values may stagnant or even go in the downward trends since this gtld imo has a problem with identity.

You know, the domainer to domainer market has died years ago. And I think it began with:
  • the financial crisis in 2008
  • the release of toxic extensions like .mobi .xxx .tel, some people have lost considerable sums in garbage extensions and they have no money left
So this may be good news for us if it drives people away from the auctions, but it has an impact on the reseller market. When I joined this forum 10 years, there was more trade between us. Now the forum is full of ghost towns. C'est la vie.

So what you are saying is that we should invest only in the best .com right now. But it makes no sense to invest in new extensions since there is no scarcity of them, and thus no aftermarket. Simply put, there is little money to be made on new extensions when you are a domainer. End users are not going to pay big bucks for a string in a TLD that was just born. Exceptions won't make it a rule.

I did not even know there was a .tel , I wonder how many other tld's I do not even know exist!

A lot probably, I myself keep learning of ones I didn't know existed since they are never talked about at all.
