data Domain Data: Chinese Investors and Numeric Domains

NameSilo
In this article, we'll be looking at numeric domain names owned by Chinese companies and investors. If you missed the last "Domain Data" article regarding LL.com and LLL.com domains owned by China then you can view that here.

In early 2014 (possibly slightly earlier), the value of numerical domain names started to increase dramatically with Chinese domain investors keen to acquire two-, three-, and four- number domain names. Since then, some five- and six- number domain names have gained popularity and are selling regularly on after-market platforms.

There are a total of 100 possible NN.com domain names and DomainTools.com have calculated that as of the end of July, 59 out of 100 (59%) NN.com domains were owned by Chinese companies or investors. In comparison, roughly 15.53% of LL.com domain names are owned in China.

There have been no public NN.com sales this year. The last public NN.com sale was 37.com for $1,960,800 in March 2014. TheDomains.com reported earlier this year that 50.com had been sold by MediaOptions.com, but the price has never been published.

As for NNN.com domain names, China owns around 480 out of a possible 1,000 domains (48%). We have three public sales for NNN.com sales from this year:
  • 345.com sold for $800,000
  • 458.com sold for $140,000
  • 144.com sold for $110,000
Anyone who's interested in finding out more about why China buys numerical domain names, and which numbers are most popular should read Raymond Hackney's guide here.

WHOIS data is imperfect (especially data involving China), so the data quoted above is only a representation, but my thanks go to Tim Chen (CEO) and Bruce Roberts (CTO) at DomainTools.com for providing the data within this article.

James-thank you for this article. You might find this interesting. While doing some very recent research re numerics I found that MANY Chinese are starting to buy numeric .io names and the buyers include Tommy Ho ( 150.io among others) and exec. with GoDaddy. We own 130.io and 330.io.
