advice A Guide To Domaining During the Summer

Spaceship Spaceship
Domain investing typically slows down during the summer months. It's not just the domain industry that winds down; web traffic is mostly down too as most of the Northern Hemisphere head off on vacations.

There are always some exceptions to the rule, but generally sales are down and interest is down.

So how do you plan for a summer in domain name investing? The following is just my opinion/advice. You're free to disagree.

Firstly, outbound sales are normally not as effective. Who wants to read a sales email when they're getting ready for a vacation or just come back from one?

I've often found that during the summer my sales emails are very ineffective, to the point where I now leave my sales emails until September when the majority of companies are functioning normally again.

If your domain investing strategy is more of a churn and burn, flip 'em quick style in which you need to get sales in July and August in order to continue, then try putting your names into an auction. A NamePros auction can work well, along with a Flippa auction. Getting a lower value for your names at auction is possible at this time of year, with less bidders typically around.

You may be lucky enough to sell a few names at this time of year from inbound enquiries; domain sales still happen!

The summer can be a good season to buy some domains at auction. With less competition around, you may be able to snag a bargain.

Privately listed names at NameJet, Flippa, Sedo, and alike may diminish in quality, but good domains are still dropping, so with less competition around, prices could be lower.

Buying inventory at this time of year could set you up for a good winter of domain sales, so I'd advise to concentrate on acquiring rather than selling during the summer.

Thanks for the advice, I also noticed a very low selling trend @ flippa these days.

I would rather prefer to hold some of my stock for a few more weeks before putting at no reserve auctions, the whole process of selling @ no reserve is an awesome experience irrespective of the end price one fetches.

But yes, this is time to stay calm and save inventory for a few more weeks as you suggested.

Hi

i think i know what you mean, but you can't get caught-up in the frenzy of nickle and dime bids.

the end price, should always be the focus.

imo...

Definitely you have a point, and I agree with you on that the end price should be the focus. I simply enjoy the feeling of a sale, rather than the price in some cases as an exception.

Sold a domain way less than I invested for it... in fact lost $600+ at flippa. If I had known, I would have waited. Not my fault, I dont know how this holiday things work for you guys as I am from the black continent :)

the decrease in volume of sales during summer, should not affect the expected price range for the domain.

you should "never" loose money in an auction.

you should always place a reserve on something of value, in a liquidation marketplace.

and yes, patience is a virtue. :)

imo....

Yeah that was my mistake. NO reserve.

I too did the same mistake, had to give the name way less than I acquired for. No worries still learning.

LOL ..... Wish @jamesiles had posted this 2 weeks ago! Good to know this factor, may be the reason, my ongoing flippa auction is not getting bids. Plus I made the mistake of listing for no reserve, thinking no reserve would attract more bids and hence more exposure. Never thought a decent drone domain would have barely any bids. Maybe even the domainers are on vacation!. Now I know.

We need a "TOP 10 Mistakes A Domainer Makes" Guide.

I disagree with the notion that the world still shuts down during summer. Of course people go on vacation but nowadays few decision makers completely cut themselves off from their work/business for an extended period of time. I may only spend 10 mins checking and responding to emails some days but I haven't had a complete 100% day off for years. Staying in touch is so easy nowadays........ no matter where you are.

Good post.

The past 2 weeks I've been on fire with inbound inquiries and converted a couple of them into $xxxx sales but I have noticed that the response I get from outbound marketing has taken a real dip. I decided to stop outbound marketing all together for the rest of this month and next month and just chillax.

I tracked the email for Mesothelioma Chicago that I own and I noticed that 3 legal companies viewed the email for up to 4 times after they got it. But nothing has happened since then, not even NOT interested.
