Registrars now blocking registration of dropped domains

GoDaddy says they're now place a 48-hour hold on new registrations of domains that expired.

I didn't call NameCheap, but based on how their site is treating dropped domains, they're also doing the same thing.

Anyone else running into this issue?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I assume no one knows of any registrar that's going to offer anything in the neighborhood of GoDaddy's $1.99 discount codes on new registrations, right?

This looks like it's going to be a permanent thing from what I'm seeing right now.

Registrars allowing reg of dropped names right now:
  • Name.com

  • Network Solutions
Please add to the list.

It happened again.

A fresh dropped domain is at this very moment available.
NAmesilo shows the domain as available
GD shows the domain as available and in the next moment as unavailable.
I assume in 1 h 20 minutes they will give it free :-/ This sucks!!

Yup -- noticed the same exact thing on one of the names I'm watching: appeared as available in GD... and then didn't.. But in reality, it's been available (and remains so) since it dropped this afternoon.

.... and exactly at 8:00:00 PM UTC GD released the dropped domains :-/

SO what is the logic of this strategy?

Are they trying to get people to use their backorder service?

Thats the 1 million dollar question.... I assume soon another registrar will offer some coupons, don't block the dropped domains and take over...

Does not make any sense IMHO. They are loosing BIG since majority of decent domains are already taken 2 hours after drop. Unless all other registrars will join them for some reason.

It could be new strategy shifting priorities from customer satisfaction to shareholders needs. Backorder is $24 something

My best guess is they are going to see if they can push some of us into using their (way) higher margin drop-catching. I don't think we will bite though. We are stingy ;)

Their drop catching sucks. They can't even beat a handreg at GoDaddy.

Helping you out with this!

EDIT: What we could do is take screenshots at drop time tomorrow and tweet them. One of the domain not available at GoDaddy, the other of the name available elsewhere.

Yeah, I saw -- thanks @Electric-Shadow! I'm trying not to be a d**k about it at this point, but want to try and see if it is intentional or not for starters.

If they're shown hard proof they won't be able to back out of confronting the problem, whether it's intentional or not. Eyes will see it!

They're 'looking into it' let's see what happens!

I have had all this crap happen to me within a couple weeks ago even.

I ran into this today. I was able to register them an hour or so after they dropped. I was just about to go with a different registrar but tried one last time and the domains were available. Mildly frustrating to say the least.

Interesting, are you suggesting that this 2 hour delay might not apply to all customers? Is there somebody who can register domains exactly when they drop?

...I forgot to take a screenshot after the droptime when the dropped domain (in this example vaaja) was not blocked anymore...

Yeah that's why I will try to have both registrar screens in one screenshot simultaneously, side by side.
