sales Closed an unexpected domain sale with a stranger at Denny's

NameSilo
An eye opener for anyone with a domain portfolio for sale should be that selling one of those properties can be as easy as going out to dinner.

Last night, my fiancée and I were debating what we should do for dinner. We went back and forth with different options and finally decided that the cost effectiveness of the Denny's $2-$8 menu was right on target for our needs and budget that night. Like finding a great deal on a domain, I tend to look for good deals on other things in life as well. We eventually decided going to Denny’s for the night.

When we were seated at our booth, we looked over the menu. During which, my phone beeped with a notification. I reached into my pocket to pull out my phone and didn't notice that some of my business cards fell on the floor.

Out of the corner of my eye, I notice a man staring over at us, making hand gestures.

To my surprise, after trying to avoid conversation, I saw him walking over towards our table. At first, I tried to fight the urge to turn and look, but I couldn’t help it. I put my phone down a bit and shifted my body around so that I could face him and respond with tact.

When he gets to the table, he bends over to pick up the business cards on the floor while saying, “Excuse me, but you dropped something.” As he straightens up, I notice that he's reading one of the cards, and he asks, “What is NamePros?” Naturally, I start explaining what it is, the benefits of being a member, and more.

A surprise reveals itself when he tells me he owns a couple domains already and asks if he could keep one of my cards.

He inquired about what type of domains I own and invest in.

Making a long story short, within 15 minutes of talking about my own domains, he makes an offer and we close a deal right there at Denny's. It was a small sale, which holds a verbal non-disclosure agreement. Nevertheless, it opened my eyes and reminded me the basic fundamental of having business cards in the first place: they will never work if they remain in the box.

I'm hoping the gentlemen already has or will eventually sign-up on NamePros to expand his domain investing adventures.

After that, I not only put a business card in the condiments carrier on the table before we left, but I also wrapped a business card with my Tip for the waitress.

What's the bottom line of my story? The ABC’s.

Always Be Closing, or in this case, marketing. You never know when or where you'll run into an end user.

I had the $4 biscuits and gravy which normally comes with 1 biscuit (cut in half) smothered in sausage gravy, hash browns, and 1 egg. However I substituted the egg for another biscuit (at no additional charge). :) it was just the right amount to curb my hunger and not over fill me. ;)

Well, I hope you and your fiancée can remain frugal, except get to enjoy many more little things in life from the undisclosed amount that you received from what could have turned out to be an awkward situation.

Congrats on getting engaged, selling a domain how you did and picking the best sounding item on the menu right now.

Thanks, and the menu Item I chose reminded me of SOS / RATs / MREs, or a combination of the 3. Which I'm sure you enjoyed plenty of as well at one time :p :) -

Nice story Eric.

First wow, cannot believe there are restaurants charging less than $8 the menu without lose money... Wondering what you can eat at that price? Or maybe is just a way to attract clients who after spend much more on extras like beverage.

Second, this outlines very well that market his site, his domains will finish paying. When you less expect it this effort will lead to a new member, or a sale. And that's sure that business cards are just one of the most basic and cheapest ways to do it, while they don' stay in the box (I smiled reading this).

Third, myself when I meet people and my sister or wife is present, both use to warn people: Do not ask him anything about his business or he will not stop speaking. I noticed it also happen the same to you ... LOL

@DomainingCom - Ya, there are some great deals out there to be had. To see what's on some Denny's $2 to $8 menus here's one of their official online menus (Some locations menus vary): http://m.dennys.com/en/menus/menu/2-4-6-8

Sometimes I even leave a business card in the bathroom on my way out. A couple years ago i acquired a design client that way. Though, it was a special kind of card; On one side I printed "Turn me over and read me, you know you want to!" (That side always faced up.) And the other side had "Ha, Ha, I made you look, now put me in your pocket in case you need my services later" followed by my contact details and what the business does. ;)

:D Eric, why have you decided to whet my appetite? Take it easy buddy, easy please. Anyway, kudos to you for the initiative, albeit 'accidental'. More :$::$::$: to your pocket. Cheers!

Whilst that sounded funny at first. It actually has logic behind it, since many in the fast food industry are looking for ways to better their life and make more money. Domain investing is an affordable venture they can make low risk investments to work towards theirs goals. It's definitely a bit more cut and dry than all the affiliate / mlm / pyramid stuff many get sucked into. And even if they wanted to do affiliate still, they may need domains to develop their portals on ;).

Granted, they may not be buying at end user prices or $1k+ aftermarket at first. But they could very well be getting their feet wet in the 3 digit ball park till they get the hang of it.

Eating at Denny's would be the last place I would expect to make a domain deal, who would have guessed!

I feel inclined to share a funny story that has nothing to do with domains but everything to do with not rushing to judgment about someone approaching you that you don't know. Some strange guy staring at you at Denny's might give you the wrong impression about his intensions. I would have immediately thought, "what the heck is this idiot staring at".

Many years ago, my wife and I moved into a new house. We hadn't been in the neighbor hood very long when I was out mowing my lawn one afternoon after work. Not long after I'm out there, some guy out soliciting comes over and tries to sell me something. I tell him I'm not interested, he continues his speal and finally, I tell him that I don't have time for this. He leaves and I continue mowing. Not long after, here comes another guy, strolling over from across the street, holding some papers in his hand. I'm thinking, here we go again. I stopped the guy before he got onto the sidewalk and told him, I don't have time for this crap and I'm not interested.

Needless to say, that was my neighbor from across the street holding onto his mail, just wanting to introduce himself and welcome me to the neighborhood. I felt like a complete idiot and I've learned to try and think before acting. You don't want to ruin any possible personal/business relationships, because you never know.

Congrats to you and Thank You for sharing your story, it brought a smile to my face!
