registrars Mysterious refunds from GoDaddy explained

Spaceship Spaceship
There have been recent reports of unexpected payments issued to GoDaddy customers. We’ve just received word that these payments were the result of a glitch in GoDaddy’s billing system, which has since been resolved.

Previously, GoDaddy had been charging its customers the ICANN fee on certain domain names that were not subject to it. For example, country code top-level domains (“ccTLD”) are not subject to the fee. As a result, GoDaddy has been refunding $0.18 on every domain name that was erroneously charged.

If you have purchased a domain name with a TLD other than those in the following list, it's possible you were improperly charged the ICANN fee on orders that were placed. If so, GoDaddy will be, or already has, refunded the erroneous charges.

GoDaddy’s Disclaimer on Mandatory ICANN Fees:
Fee charged by ICANN

This mandatory fee is charged by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers: www.icann.org), and becomes effective on November 1, 2004.

Thus, the fee on a one year .com registration would be $0.18. The fee would be $0.36 for a two year registration (i.e. $0.18 times 2). Additional years would be at $0.18 per year.

Thanks David, they just sent me $10.65. I just have not regged enough names there for .18 to add up to $10.65 so not sure what it's for, no explanation with the Paypal.

@equity78

My account refunds are from rather old ccTLD registrations, but I wouldn't be surprised if Go Daddy is fixing more than one issue in their accounting and related systems prior to their IPO.

I received my refunds in the form of account credits.

Try calling your account manager to investigate it. It'd be nice to know what else is causing refunds from them.

Good question. All of my payments to Go Daddy were via PayPal, too. Maybe refunds relating to older transactions (>= 60 days) were issued as account credits instead. (Just a guess.)

Maybe they are compensating all of us for dropping the [email protected] help option ????
