I was just checking out thedomains blog of Michael who is also into the new gTLDs and saw his latest article about Rick. Looks like the new gTLDs are getting more and more traction with serious domainers entering the arena :)

I think Rick always planned on buying gTLD's, just not 50,000.

He is the domain king after all. ;)

Yes, remember flowers.mobi for $100k? Such a leader! Look, the guy was smart and lucky getting .com names before anyone knew WTF was going on back in the early or mid 90's. He caught a ride on the .com inflation train after that until the recession hit. Hallelujah Mammy! After that, it appears to me that he's grabbing at straws like the rest of us.

It's always the same story with some people :) He was "lucky", got on "early", not "perfect" etc. Same with people in the past when printers appeared and they still thought they'll never replace the typing machines. Or just recently when a few years ago people laughing at cryptocurrencies. Then once the dust settles the same people will say they couldn't get them because they're premium, then they'll say they were already taken.

Also cracks me up to always bring up .mobi into this. I believe .mobi did well for quite some people but it's now like comparing apples with oranges.

So keep laughing at Rick while he scratches his balls on the beach thinking of you laughing ;)

if you can afford to hold these new domains for 5-10 years before you can sell them for a good profit, good for you. you can't compare what rick did with .com to what happening now...at all. .com didn't hold ANYTHING back, there were NO such thing as premium renewals or anything like that. of course renewals cost more back then but these new registries have gamed the system in their favor, big time.

Isn't that the point of being a serious domain investor ? Holding on to your "realestate" for the right moment :)
Ofcourse there are many others who are also domain investors but you can compare those with daytraders in the stockmarket. Also take into account, are you talking to a domainer who lives on 1.99 godaddy codes to make a buck or the average domainer with an investment horizon.

Still, pricing for the experienced domain investors is reasonable (not talking about the top of the top).
Times change ofcourse, back then many people didn't even know what internet was or it even existed.

I don't know about you, I am not rich so I need sales to keep going.

I'm not rich either, just that i try to do my homework and understand that beside risk one needs also patience. It's ofcourse nice to earn with quick sales especially if domaining is a fulltime job for some. I'm not a fulltime domainer so i don't mind to take it a bit easy when it comes to time.

PS: I don't know or garantee how all this will develop, but i do know that doing nothing and sitting at the sidelines will get me nothing.

If a registry wants wide eyed domainer dollars then Rick Schwartz will make their dollar go a lot further than 50 cent

Probably brought up here because of flowers

I get the impression that in addition to good names he is also a really talented sales guy. He also moves in circles where serious money is not that big a deal.

Deep pockets are also a serious negotiation advantage. If the other side knows you don't need the money, their position is much weaker.

Um, no. I figured a bunch of newbies would get all excited once that news broke. If you actually read his response, and if it's true, then:

Do I expect to make money with them? NO
Are they good investments? NO
Would I suggest others do this? NO

So if he's up on your altar, he just said they were bad investments.

Plus, you have to keep this in mind. They have money to burn, most people buying up new gtlds, don't. Most blogs are now pretty much paid for, another one sold out today. So take those with a grain of salt as well when you see the pumping going on.

Also, if you read his blog and the GetFido post that was getting taken apart he said:

"I don’t endorse. I promote."

"Whether it was Domain Sponsor, TrafficZ, Skenzo, .Co, .XXX. When they spend their money to become the overall sponsor or host the big party, I have to assume they have a reason to do that and my job is to make everyone aware of it."

You pay the money, he promotes.

Sometimes the amount of gullibility out there is amazing. It's like if one of these guys say jump, you would actually say how high.

Let me add this, he was also the guy that spent 6 figures on a .mobi and sold it for peanuts:

"Taking $200k out of my pocket to buy flowers.mobi given my financial position was no big deal to me."

Bought for $200,000, sold for $6,500

Are you in that position? Spending $200,000 is no big deal to you?

The best way to earn online dollars is to create a business. I certainly wouldn't do that on anything but .com ;)

I think the high end dominers who were opposed to the new gTLD additions, have come to realize they are here to stay so now they get there feet wet and are testing the waters.

I love the few names I have.

There are vast rain forests that most have never seen. Mountain ranges that go unknown to many.

Yes, these new extensions exist. That really means nothing if nobody knows where to find them!

I think there will be some success in the new gTLDs BUT with 1000 choices, even Rick has no idea which ones. If you hand reg a category killer domain in one of MANY extensions...YOU WILL MAKE MONEY. The problem is how many category killer domains can you reg in the $3-5k range? Rick and a couple dozens 'others', think nothing of dropping $100K and wait 5 years for a return. Can you do that?

Lets talk in 5 years to see if people know about them. Remember that tv show from back in the day when they were discussing the internet and the camera man had to explain to the hosts and guests what the internet was?

.CLUB is doing well for only one reason...they are doing a great job promoting it. NO other extension is doing this. I'm not sure how much of the 'after market' is investors vs end user for his own use...if the investors don't support the gTLDs , they will fail. My contention is the real long term investors will reg the absolute best domains for a specific extension, the rest will die. The short term flippers, will have a limited budget and must flip the domain for a profit quickly.

Well they exist, that doesn't mean that they account for anything. After all, .mobi still exists. .tel still exists. And so many others. Nobody cares.
Besides, you need to be prepared to accept that some TLDs will fail and disappear.

The problem is that even if awareness comes, that means nothing to domainers. Why would people want to buy your domains when they have so much choice ?

If you want to make sales, you need to own good domains .com or strong ccTLDs because everybody knows these TLDs. On the other hand, there is no particular incentive for an end user to buy a domain on the aftermarket (or at an inflated regfee), when the TLD is not readily recognized and trusted by consumers. End user have plenty of options.

Seriously people ! You don't realize that the domain space is saturated. Even in .com the demand for aftermarket domains is very limited. The action is not happening in the new TLDs. Few sales are taking place, and the seller is almost always the registry. If you really have money to burn, you can still find a game where the odds are not stacked so much against you.

I always respect your views sdsinc, the old mobi, .tel lingo hey :) ... You are very smart and know those days were a different ball game. I don't feel like breaking it down atm. I do accept some gtlds will fail but i also accept the fact some will flourish "don't you?".

One day sensible single keyword combos will fetch a premium and possibly more than the .com. I'll probably be in a rocking chair watching my 3d printer make my dentures when it does happen, but it will happen.

sensible single keyword combos is the key! and in some extensions they are rare "wink wink hint hint"

I know end users people in "whos who", who have bought gtlds or are affiliated with the companies planning to use gtlds and they LOVE them! " exact match business keyword names " .company, .management, .consulting, .finance etc etc

It is way way way too early to form any solid conclusions imo especially about .whatever brand awareness or re-sales, because we all know the marketing for these extensions has been very poor!

All you have to do is look at human nature and you'll see what's going to happen. But to determine these will fail because .com is king and .biz and .mobi suck just doesn't cut it. :) You do have other valid points there sdsinc!

Cool, can you name a few and the sites. I like to see how they're being used.

i dont think they want to get wrapped up in this discussion ;)

I can say they saw an opportunity, regged expensive names 500$ + renewals, and are happy to pay the renewals.

Just because a company regs a name doesn't mean they have to use them in the first year....

I think that is a really good idea is do your homework on the gtlds before you reg. If you can find several good prospects to sell them to, you may have a winner.
