Hi there, im looking to get advice on setting up a website. I have hosting at the moment with CloudBoo.org i have the bronze package. Ive setup my website and im looking into purchasing a SSL certificate. At the moment ive receive a free shared certificate which i dont know what it is.

My Buisness is just a simple local tool shop we do national sales iswell.

My questions

Must i purchase the hosting plan that provides me with a dedicated ip in order to use a SSL certificate

Which SSL cert should i get?

Does the SSL cert work with prestashop?

Help would really be appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

Yes you need dedicated ip if you wish to install your own SSL
Which one depends on your needs,

If you are willing to make internet transactions then yes - you really need to get a SSL certificate, therefore it is the best way to secure your network.

Shared SSL certificate comes for free by default with most hosting providers and can be used only following way - https://www.hostingprovider.com/~yourUsername/

So if you're doing business it's highly recommended to get a dedicated IP (as SSL cert. requires it) and then install your own SSL certificate.

Certificates are not very expensive today and can be obtained from as little as EUR 9 - EUR 12 per year. Check the marketplace section for the best offers.

SSL isn't always important, but as people have mentioned above me, for online business and ecommerce it is, so I suggest you to find a reliable hosting provider that has support for ecommerce activity (I use 1and1 and we also run a small business). And always do a background check on both the domain and the hosting provider if they're not the same, because it's ridiculous how many spam 'hosting' sites there are these days..

SSL can be a critical element not only if you are running an e-commerce site but also if any type sensitive information is being passed on your site. Many hosts offer a free shared SSL but for larger commerce sites you want and need a dedicated IP with your own SSL. It is critical to you and your clients. Also, be aware most hosts will charge you for the installation of the SSL. Just a heads up so that you aren't surprised if that does come up for you.

There are a lot of good hosts out there. I'd recommend looking into MDD Hosting.

As its a simple local tool shop, so it won't require a Organizational or an Extended SSL with high security parameters. A Basic SSL certificate will also do the job for you. Any SSL certificate will be compatible with Prestashop.

Don't you think OP has already found a solution after these months?
