Hi, need help on choosing the right hosting service for a small business, shared hosting or vps? I understand vps is more secured, what do you normally use when your building sites for small businesses?

Hello startupsold, In my opinion the right hosting srevice for your small business would be either VPN or a shared hosting, because it is more secure, faster and more reliable.

I don't think that VPN will do the job, as VPN is virtual private network, not VPS :)

To OP
go with shared hosting.

Start from shared hosting from the decent host.

Well, I guess your right since VPN doesn't really rely on the size of the company, so I'd go with shared hosting too.

I would go with shared hosting.

Got a few simple sites on http://www.GoDaddy.com and no issues. For anything that makes $$$$ where 100% uptime is needed http://www.LiquidWeb.com If your building/managing others accounts think a VPS from Liquid Web would do the trick.

It depends on what your needs are and what your business is but most typically use shared hosting starting out and then move to a vps.

Just make sure, whoever you pick, to do your homework. Web hosting is kinda like going on a job interview.. "its all about being at the right place at the right time." just because 50 other people may have bad experiences, doesn't mean you will.

It really depends on your current and future needs. How many unique visitors check your site per day? What is your website built with? So you expect a quick boost of visitors or a steady flow? Indeed, for small business websites, most often Shared Hosting is absolutely enough to do the job. Still, you have to think about the future too, so consider a company that can give you easy and affordable upgrade options. :gl:

I too would recommend you to start with a Shared plan for the developing and hostig the werbsites initially. As and when the websites become popular and start drawing good amount of traffic, you can upgrade onto a VPS and the hosting service provider will help you with the migration process.

Web hosting

VPS is good.Virtual Private Server Hosting is an innovative approach to partitioning physical servers into several virtual machines.. VPS will give you the independence and flexibility of a dedicated hosting service, but at the price of a high-end shared hosting service. Each virtual server on the machine is like an apartment suite. On a shared hosting server, problems with one website might cause the entire server to go down, causing all of the other websites on that server to go down with it. This would not happen on a VPS machine because only the problematic container would go down, but the other containers would be unaffected.Get the VPS hosting from a good online service provider like Tucktail.com .Here you can customize your bandwidth, control panel and backup options

If you are new to hosting I’d suggest you go for shared hosting as it is one of the cheap form of hosting. Shared hosting is mostly recommended for small business, personal website and for people with lower budget. There are many web hosting company available you can select according to your requirement and budget. However a good web hosting is the one that will provide 24/7 technical support and at least 99% server uptime. There are also other web hosting features that you can consider like security, data access speed, data backup and flexibility to upgrade/downgrade plan according to your need.

Hi,

Do you have any experience with servers?

I'd offer two options:

1) if you need dedicated resources, full admin control and easy to understand control panel, then you can go to VPS with WHM / cPanel, it may cost a bit higher but you'll get great option.

2) Get shared hosting with cPanel, additionally add dedicated IP address for privacy, etc. - this is cheapest option, though not very recommended for resource intensive websites.

Speak with hosting provider about your project , so more details and best options would be provided.

Start with something small. A shared plan perhaps?

Shared plan could be cheapest option, that's for sure. However, important things are reliability and 24x7 customer support.

Personal website hosting is a booming business. People everywhere are building websites to post precious wedding pictures, baby pictures, family video clips, party invitations, personal blogs and more. You don't need to be an expert to pull this of either.

Confusing answer huh? :)

Actually, OP was asking about hosting solution for a small business and here he got answers, hope he's satisfied with his choice.

I have been looking and searching for weeks too and it's really hard to make a choice mainly because all the hosting providers claim to be the best and they are not; they all say they have 99.999999999999 up time and they don't..etc..etc..etc.

It's also hard because us, as customers, don't always know already about the needs of our website/s; how it will grow, what kind of traffic, peak traffic or a constant one....

It's pretty impossible to determine especially if it's a new website ( a different story would be transferring a website to another provider as in that case you would know more about it )

To cut it short my personal opinion is that cheap is fine, but it's not always the best solution or the main aspect to base a decision on. I prefer to spend some more dollars per month rather than having to spend hours with the customers service trying to fix problems.

I would also go with an independent hosting provider; not one owned by EIG to be clear.

For my needs I decided to go with InMotion hosting ( I am not a customer yet but I will be in the next days ) which has a great reputation especially for " business hosting " and it's also green ( one important aspect for me ). I will go with the reseller hosting so I can host as many websites I want and most of all I won't oversell my space; thing that is widely done by ALL the providers when it's about shared hosting.

I hope I have been helpful for you.

I will tell you the best...
I have hosted my blogs with them for a couple of years now.
Never any problems that they did not fix asap.

And it is in the hosting for sale forum off and on with great coupouns.

Host Mantis.

The "best" does not exit, every costumer has different requirements and what is best for one costumer might not be the best for other customers. Some customers may require windows hosting while others may require Linux hosting, some customers may require Apache while other may require LiteSpeed, etc.

So, the best provider for a customer is the provider that can provide all or most of the customer requirements.

What a customer should look for is a reliable trusted and honest provider with good reputation, quality customer support, good uptime record, etc, capable of providing all or most of the customer needs.

Go to a few hosting review sites and read what people have said, there is a high chance that a host has written positive things about himself so you are looking for negative reviews because those will tell you the truth.
