Of course renewals are strong. But this is due to basic attachment/lottery psychology that registrars use when creating their models.

Another factor that plays into the registrars favor is fear based. The user is afraid that if they drop a domain, someone else will register it and make money. This would make them feel bad. The owner would rather lose money in renewals rather than take the chance that someone else might benefit.

These factors create a massive renewal loop in the system. However, strong renewals are not good for domain resellers, they are only good for registries/registrars.

The vast majority of people reading this (and perhaps humanity as a whole) may in fact benefit with total group abandonment of this extension. Releasing these domains back into the wild would in fact give to the greater whole and reduce overall system entropy. IMHO

Yup, renew it all and hunt down the end user.

Sooner or later, even the hardliners come around to reality. :]

It was said tongue in cheek. Why would you let something drop when you can make money from it? That was the point. Micro is always saying, incredibly, to let them all drop.

Labeling me as a "hardliner" is a ridiculous sentiment...

I don't think renewal is that strong. If it were that strong, they would have the domain reg counter up for everyone to see. It is curiously absent.

With all that money, they should just try and acquire the .COM.

Brad

Too late now. The owner of realtime.com would probably want 10% of the 100 million.

Agreed. However I think the .com owner would screw them up now that he knows about the $100 million funding.

When the owning company has a market cap of 300M and has a name based on "REAL", I don't think the purchase would have been cheap or possible.

Something like RealtimeWeb.com etc ? I guess you can debate the pros and cons of top keyword vs 2 words vs other alternatives.

More interesting is the actual push technology. They're not the first but they're the most invested in this space that I know of. Many people started thinking about this because of Twitter :)

I hadn't checked who the owner was, now that I have, I can tell you for sure acquiring the name wouldn't have been cheap in any case :D Anyway, the name was registered on July 20th, 2010 so it seems a $30 registration fee was all they were willing to pay for the domain :)

How did the offer come about? Did they email you or you them? IMO, with a $300 offer I would counter at $1500 to $3000, which is a fair price for both sides if they contacted you and see how they respond to that. Good luck with it!

This guy emailed me.

Yes. SELL SELL SELL! :) :)

I think i'll hold on to the domain :)
just renewed it.

If its another domainer then you may be able to squeeze out a few extra hundred - If is an end user, then I agree with the others - counter at 1.5K or even take it to 3K

I was contacted by a domainer a few weeks ago with a low xxx offer and sold it for high xxx

I am sure he is a domainer. Seemed like a dotCO collector. He hunts for expiring co domains and buys them for a bargain. My domain was expiring, after the offer i renewed it :D

You'll wish you sold it when renewal time comes again. I would take the money while it's on the table and then run to a better investment B-)

Yesterday I drove past a Security system and Lock company truck in my area. Older, well known business in my community and they have changed their url to SSNW dot co and it was posted all over the truck. I believe that they have many service trucks. Thought it was pretty cool to see .co being used.

Interestingly, the .com is being used by a company here in Bellingham also, though I have never heard of them.

Hey Keith,

A better investment like? Can you suggest me something? PM me.

I would scour the aftermarket for the best .com that your budget will allow. You can also go after expired .com but competition is fierce.
